i did not realize this had been reported over a 20 year span... wow........ this is just devestating to know that this went on for so long..........
I was reading the update DPCA put out, thinking that this might be a good case for them to examine what more they can do, in addition to what AKC purports to do in kennel inspections; ie visit kennel for cleanliness, inspect health records. (But which clearly failed here...)
Looks like DPCA is thinking ahead, talking transportation to spread out dogs, in addition to leveraging DPCA refered dobe rescues with quarterly donations by making a match.
Weirdly, tho
I noticed a reference to a change.org petition that they suggested NOT giving to, as if it would hurt breeders...
so of course I went and looked- but only recent one was advocating for stiffer penalties for EIS. That ship has sailed- judge decided...
so kind of a "Streisand Effect" to even bring it up, hmmm. I guess thats an indication of over-defensiveness. Misguided?
Seems like the best way to affect change is place accent on the positive, bottom up, common sense, vs defending a bad breeder once on DPCA list far in past?
Frankly I dont see DPCA at fault for something a mentally ill old guy did to his dogs. Thats like suing NRA for a mentally ill gun user.
So if I were leveraging talent and money, I'd look to the states with already best laws on kennel oversight, and the DPCA chapters in those states or others with best results in legislative common sense on breeder regulation...
And promote education and bottom up support for common sense ground up activism...basically, you want to create an Army of Davids, bottom uo to platform of a KISS approach to incremental change in multiple places. In tegulatory world this is how you use the Uniform Code as a starting place and let the States adapt what works.
DPCA could take the lead and do better than AKC, by setting and communicating standards for breeders and let those be the gold standard others, inc states oversight.
But then I'm not in the show world, so I know little of the politics people and culture at the top. And I'm sure the TPTB arent looking for Board level advice from a noob...there is lots to do RN for the dogs...getting the healthy ones rehomed and rehabbing the rest ...
But maybe in few months, this is a great lesson learned opportunity to take dobe show breeder best practices to next level, and tap energy for same ideas in functional dog world.
Are there national rescue trade associations that are doing well, legislatively?
Sometimes 1+1=3 but to take advantage of new but proven ideas you have to think out of the box.
Anyone listen to the Functional Dog podcast in re: Kim Kavan book on "The Dog Merchants"?
Talks about the commercial dog breeders...was that what Marty EIS was aspiring to?
Also: side topic but to you cognoscenti:
Are there any large Dobe specific puppy-mill type animal farm operations in the US,
as we read of overseas...Kimbertal, Del Nasi, Pride of Russia?
The breeder world is very murky to me.
But shouldnt be, as the more transparency in best standards the better- a riding tide floats all boats... and DPCA seems to be trying hard, with recent website changes, the vet seminar on "DCM and health plans" on the free educational side.
I'm overall impressed how fast they responded here...kudos.
Very interesting.
