Started early last week, cow paddy, black, repugnant odor diarrhea….then it turned into bloody bright red diarrhea ~8days.
Crazy that everyday was practically the same, small 2-3 tablespoon bloody squirts through the day and then two large paddies at 1:30 a.m and 4 a.m. Just miserable.
I stopped the tuna/whitefish kibble, went to sensitive GI wet food, added probiotics and pumpkin. No change whatsoever and was even getting worse.
I searched and searched and just couldn’t find the source- I know for fact she did not get into my crawfish boil remnants. But what was it?? I know she is an acorn eater so I kept drawing conclusion of partial obstruction. That was kinda questionable because she was always eating and drinking and had a shat load of energy. I remember @Doberman Gang comment one time that if they are still eating and drinking then odds are they will shake through it.
Bloody diarrhea was getting worse and at night she was shaking and pacing the floor…next morn, I made another lap around the back yard- hoping to see some solidified poop but nothing but black squirts all over the grass. And then I saw it, on the back fence it looked like one of the Dobermans was digging out of the yard. Neither one of my Dobermans dig, so this was very odd. Got closer to the fence and I could smell it, jumped the fence and looked on the other side and Yup….there it is- somebody dumped cooking grease right on the fence line and it leaked into my yard. I always keep my eyes on my Dobermans- head on a swivel with them but at 10pm or 5am in the dark for bathroom outside.?.?.? One should feel safe in your own yard.
Googled dog eats large amounts of oil/grease…. Acute pancreatitis: vomiting, bloody diarrhea, lethargy.
I talked to the neighbor back there and she said she had seen a hole on the fence line and thought it was a snake hole (really a crawfish mound) so she poured a pot of fish fry oil down that hole. She was apologetic and deeply saddened that Freyja is sick.
I really thought I could ride it out with Freyja and treat it from home but I just could not get control over the diarrhea and the last night was really bad. Went and saw the vet yesterday hoping there was not permanent pancreas/organ involvement going on….
$500 later but absolutely relieved to find out that Freyja’s bloodwork was not out of the norm…Everything looked good. Also, YAY for being heartworm negative (always a big issue in the south). So I just needed some meds to get ahead of the diarrhea and to calm her GI tract down.
Got some:
antibiotics- just in case giardia
anti-diarrhea- Pro- Pectalin tablets
nausea meds- cerenia- dam that shit is expensive. Like $15 a pill!
Low fat wet food
Gave meds last night and thankfully we both slept well and I woke up with no surprises in the house. I think she is over the main hurdle and will continue to look and pray for solid poop (as with every normal day)!!!!
I thought it was very unusual that during the entire fiasco…. that always guilty assclown Ragnar had zero issues or maladies!!! But nope…he is finally the innocent observer here with no convictions.
Go figure that one.
