Diagnosed with hip dysplasia

Hi everyone,

Noya was just diagnosed with hip dysplasia by the vet. From the vet’s explanation and my understanding, hip dysplasia is not something that can be fully ‘cured.’ Instead it’s just something you manage (correct me if I’m wrong). As of now, the doctor gave me synoquin and rimadyl to help him.

So I would like to ask what are your recommendations to alleviate and prevent further progression? I’m open to supplements, possible alternative treatments, lifestyle changes, or any other thing that could help him.

Thank you!

Do you have the x-rays? Were they graded by Penn Hip or OFA? It is very dependent on severity of dysplasia, but limited jumping (like up to a high bed or vehicle or sports jumps) and if possible use swimming for maintaining fitness and keeping the dog as slim & trim as possible. Any extra weight adds to hip mobility problems.

Best to you and Noya.

Unfortunately these are what I'd guess as moderate to severe. This is a Doberman I presume? I always thought that Dobermans in general were not as prone to HD as so many other breeds. I'm so sorry.

You can get a lot of information and see comparative photos here: Hip Dysplasia | OFA

Limit any hard exercise other than swimming. It appears you have no over-weight issues, so that's an advantage. I don't have any personal experience on supplements for support. The sockets are shallow and there is much remodeling on the neck of the femors, so I have doubts anything will improve. How old is Noya?

Yes, Noya is a doberman. He is currently 6 years old and will be 7 this November. Yeah, the doctor did say there’s little room for improvement, just try to prevent it from progressing. I’ll look into the link you shared. Thank you!

But you can help him with the discomfort. As @Ravenbird said swimming is great! Also NSAIDs, (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) as well as joint supplements with ingredients like glucosamine, chondrotin and omegs 3's can help reduce inflammation.
I personally would start with golden paste. It's a simple thing to make and you can find a recipe anywhere, even right here with a simple search. Check with your Vet before giving anything though.

I used CBD oil when I had a dobe with a deformed leg...also swam her, which helped her core stay strong. I was not giving her any medication with it; so you may need to do research on mixing. WIth the CBD she did not have trouble getting to a standing postion from the floor. And she could buck around like a storm.
This is what AI says

CBD oil cannot structural cure hip dysplasia, but clinical evidence suggests it can significantly reduce joint inflammation and ease chronic pain to improve your dog's mobility. While the abnormal "ball and socket" alignment of hip dysplasia is a structural issue requiring veterinary management, CBD acts as a natural anti-inflammatory by interacting with your dog's endocannabinoid system to alter how their nervous system processes pain signals. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Key Benefits for Dysplasia
  • Reduces Joint Inflammation: Decreases swelling and eases friction within the grinding hip joint.
  • Manages Chronic Pain: Functions as a natural analgesic to improve your dog's daily comfort.
  • Eases Muscle Stiffness: Relaxes the tight, overworked muscles surrounding the poorly aligned joints.
  • Complements Joint Protocols: Works safely alongside glucosamine, chondroitin, and omega-3 fatty acids. [1, 2, 3]

Recommended CBD Products
When addressing a severe structural issue like dysplasia, look for highly concentrated, pet-safe formulations with visible third-party lab testing: [1, 2]
  • Honest Paws Mobility Line: Formulated explicitly for joint support, using full-spectrum hemp extract and organic ingredients.
  • ABSC Organics 1200mg CBD Oil: Highly recommended for larger breeds prone to dysplasia (like German Shepherds), offering a high concentration so you do not have to force large fluid volumes into your dog's mouth.
  • Buster's Hip and Joint Formula: A specialized liquid option that blends hemp oil directly with joint-protecting glucosamine. [1, 2, 3]
