I always like to remember how the official dog (mascot) of the U.S. Marine Corp used to be the Doberman instead of the Bulldog that it now is, I believe anyway.

The Bulldog has always been the moniker of the USMC, it began in WWI. Dobermans were used in Panama during WWII. As they were donated to the corps.
The term Devil Dog was believed to have originated in 1918 during World War I, the Germans called marines “Teufel Hunden” which translates to Devil Dog in English. They used this phrase because the marines fighting style was fierce.
The exact origination is up debate as some believe it came from the Japanese who saw “devils” fighting them.
