Dealing with other people's comment toward your "aggressive breed" dog

Yesterday, the dogs and I were outside. I have my backyard pretty well screened with various plantings. You can't really see into my yard. But the dogs do hear people walking by. They run up to the fence to watch, well, Drake watches, Rumor is still learning and barks sometimes. I hear the little kids saying Dogie, Dogie, we want to pet the Dogie! Mom says 'you don't want to pet those dogies, they'll take your arm off'
I got up to take a look at who it was. I know them and knew they would be coming back by to get home.
Drake and Rumor were waiting on the front porch. .....we had a talk. ;)

Yup, at the forest preserve yesterday, I was having Rubie go through her cycle of 'tricks,' (sit, down, sit, paw, paw, watchme) and some little kid pointed at her and said "DOGGIE!" Dad said, "that one will take your arm off!" and I looked right at him and said, "No she won't!" He laughed a little so I asked the kid if he'd like to pet her. She sat there like a perfect lady, accepting tiny pets. HRMPF.

I have actually recently had two different incidents where people were being rude and ignorant. My dobie and I were just taking a stroll minding our own business and woman walking with her 3 kids and husband that was nowhere near us PURPOSELY said loudly "come on guys, that is not a nice puppy, stay away from those monsters"....I was LIVID and I ended up confronting the woman because I felt so disrespected while Apollo just sat silently next to me. Another incident was at a Petsmart. I was at the checkout and the lady behind me had the nerve to loudly turn to her friend and say "that dog should not be in here and should be put down". I am sure you can imagine how mad I was after I heard those words come out of her mouth. My dog? Once again, he was just sitting there. People these days.......you just have to learn to tune them out, turn them into background noise.

I haven't been on this site long but I figure if anyone knows how I'm feeling right now it would be other Doberman owner.
Today I went for a walk with my little boy, Rico. Rico usually walks on the leash very well and normally on my left side. This evening I wasn't considering a formal walk and our walking pattern was a little different. This landed him near the grass where I think some ants found him. It was dark out so couldnt see much. I just began wiping him down frantically hoping to brush off whatever it was that was making him uncomfortable. He was jumping around a bit when a vehicle pulled around the corner and into a driveway down around me. I took my headphones out of my ears so I could hear if they said hi or ask me if Rico was okay. I'm a friendly neighbor and I didn't want to be rude my not responding. I wish I had left my earphones in. Maybe then I wouldn't have walked home crying. The guy voiced loudly to his family " Get the hell in the house. We don't need anybody getting bit around here." Normally, my feelings and emotions aren't stirred up by someone's arrogant rude remarks, but after I finished helping Rico and continued down with our walk I got so upset I could have exploded. That man doesn't know me or my dog. Rico was being bit up by bugs. Not trying to be vicious or attack someone. I love this dog. In only less than 3 months that I've had Rico I have the love, respect and loyalty towards him as he does for me. This dog is the best friend I never had and for that guy to say something like that about him really cut me.

I guess I just need to vent and hope that someone reads through this long story and give some advice.
Hang in there!!! As other poster have said you will always have those folks in society that just don't have a clue. As another poster said you will have many more joyous moments than bad. Our two boys are wonderful and as the neighbors get to know them they have been well received. In fact, they have the UPS and FEDEX guys trained. They don't show up without treats. LOL

Well the fact is during second world war Doberman used heavily by Germans. They trained certain way and they get the job done as they asked.
So lots of people with ( eastern) European heritage as well certain religious background have the fears and hate from/ towards the breed it is understandable but the dog trained by military and has no choice.
Even US Army started using them during second world war as far as I know.
Anyways it is what it is. My dog loves kids licks them her tail moves on cycle when she see a kid.
I know a very wealthy Jewish guy. I saw him in street, his mother is around 90 asked me please keep your dog away from baby. Even the guy knows my dog and uses 3 Germanshepered to protect his mansion in Florida.... Whatever.
My aunts both live in Germany everytime they call it is about my war dog unbelievable....
I understand few more languages and all the time hear... What an ugly dog... Dog or dinosaur... And goes on I even don't react.
We have smaller breeds attacking Audrey bite her tail jump on her she dose nothing. ( well sometime I seem she gets pissed her face changes and ready to open the mouth so I have to push her other way with a leave it command.)

Reminds me of how here in Cincinnati, I have happened to find a few plaques that have been set up. They are next to street signs and say something like: "This street was formerly named (whatever German name) but was renamed (around WWII) because of anti-German hysteria." This city has a strong German heritage – historically, anyway.

Welcome to DCF from Florida

the lady behind me had the nerve to loudly turn to her friend and say "that dog should not be in here and should be put down".
Holy Crap! It would have been hard for me to contain myself with that one! It's bad enough to call my dog a 'monster' (which I would probably laugh (as my dog sat quietly) ) and say, Oh, yea, he's a real killer. :spit:

But to say he should be put down?? :wideyed: Who does she think she is??! I see myself inches from her face, saying, "Excuse me???" :tap: I wouldn't want a confrontation but with a mouth like that, it just makes my blood boil. I hate when people get cocky like that. Bullies, they are! All talk, no knowledge. I'd have to set her straight. And then send her to :dc: for some real insight! ;)

Tad my husband is from Cinci and his brother is heavily into the German heritage. He has even located relatives in Germany and has visited them and had them visit him. Now he is insistent that we host them as well. I do not speak German except for dog commands and I don't plan to cultivate that language.
I don't have a problem with them coming down here, however I will not host them in our home. Essentially they are strangers to me that do not speak my language. I will happily put them in a vacation rental as I don't think they would fare well in our home, especially with Bogie and Bacall, not to mention the 'birds.'

This part also pissed me off! Who in their right mind would go that far? Who made them judge, jury, and executioner?
Agree, I might have even added that I could arrange for my dog to put her down. Such stupid, stupid people.
:spit: OMG, this one I have to remember! Can you image the look on their faces?!

That is wildly unjust. Thing is, there's a good chance the person so boldly pontificating that your Doberman should be put to death by virtue of its simply existing and being of a certain breed is also a person who would tell you you were cruel if you set out poison for a mole or ground hog to get it to stop destroying your yard.

Good on ya for saying something. These comments are really going too far. Take heart though, not all interactions will be that negative, there are nice people out there too.

Then there is me at the PetSmart checkout. I look behind me and there is a large gap in the line :spit: The cashier loved Kaiser and had him sit and then handshake and K ended up getting multiple treats and holding up the line :DThen he did his famous Dobie lean against the cashier when he stepped out to rub his head. That was a really nice moment - and an exemplary employee!

Was traveling with a co-worker who LOOOOOOOVES to talk (I'm more the sit-in-silence type) and he was going on and on about his last dog, a lab/chow mix, and how she got really aggressive and started snapping at people toward the end of her life blah blah blah. He asked what kind of dog I had and I told him a Doberman. His follow-up question, "Do you need to put a muzzle on her when you take her for a walk?" Uh... Whaaaaa?

This just made me laugh out loud. Pushing the funny button just wasn't sufficient enough. ...

"The worst I recall is some idiot shouting "I hope you have a good hold on him" from about 50 feet away."

ROTFLOL. You could have told him that girly men should wear Depends when leaving the safety of their home if such life changing events caused them to soil themselves.
