Bring the bag

Maze

Member
So as we all should know, Dobermann created his Pinscher to protect him as he collected some owed currency in bags. I read that he even used his dogs to retrieve the bag so I want to teach Maze how to retrieve an item, specifically a bag.

Do any of you here have advice on how to teach a Dobie how to retrieve bags or items? She knows how to sit, speak, lie down, shake (her paw)...is there something else she needs to know before I can get to the point where I want her to retrieve a bag?

Oh yes. A very useful and enjoyable thing to do with your Dobe.

Biggest starting point: Train them to pick up an item on the floor/ground right in front of you, and train them to hand it to you – NOT drop it. (I like to pretend it's nitro glycerin and it will explode if they drop it :lolsign:)

As you progress, I would insist that they hold it up high for you – I prefer to not even have to bend down at all to take it from them. There's one great thing about Dobermans – their being tall with long necks.

I didn't know about the Herr Dobermann having them retrieve the bag thing. Cool. Where did you read that? It reminds me of how Rottweilers are reputed to have sometimes worn the money bag around their necks. It's like: Come an' get it, fools :bat:

Start small and simple and work up to distance.

I would even say start with holding the bag and just have her put it in her mouth for a second and then catch it when she spits it out or give her a Drop It cue, treat, repeat, and add difficulty/distance.

Will she fetch and retrieve a ball, currently? I guess Rubie doesn't but Moo (my, eh hem, retriever) is perfect with a wait, retrieve, and returning to hand

From my experience Dobie are natural retrievers. When I play with Rose with her toys I repeatedly say its name. Once she knows what an item is its pretty easy to ask her to get it and bring it to me. Like anything else, make it fun

As you were; I confused the military working dog with the tax collecting dog. It would be cool if his dogs did retrieve bags though.

I kinda hope evidence or stories can confirm that-

"So there i was; it was me and my dog and the man was upset he had to give me the money. He was a big muscular lad, which actually frightened me, and I commanded my Dobie here to pick up the bag for me."
