Archer's ACL Surgery

Poor guy :( I'm so sorry for the both of you :( it's never fun when they have to go through things like this. I'm glad he's in recovery and as a dedicated well versed momma to nurse him back to health :) you'll be back to yourself soon buddy ! Best of wishes to you and your whole gang :)
Thanks!! It's not fun, but just part of life. I was just glad he was fixable and it wasn't anything more serious.

When I was a child our poodle tore each acl at separate times. Both times she came back as strong as ever as if nothing ever happened.
Get well soon Archer
Thank you! Good to hear! Vet said his knees will more than likely be better than they were before the tear. It is more than likely this is congenital and also secondary to him having to be neutered at 12 months. Tack on an extra energetic performance dog with two crazy sisters and this was just waiting to happen.

@Archer

A little off topic but.
You have health insurance on your crew?
Considering one has eaten a $2k+ sock and Owchers leg...And you have more Dobertroublemakers too...

It's something I am now considering given my own dogs issues as well as seeing the experiences of your crew and others here.
I'm thinking it might not be as silly an idea as I once did.

I do. LOLing at the thought of the world's most expensive sock. I have Trupanion. Highest of the rates I found, but best coverage. Great service. I used to poo-poo the thought of it too...until I realized how much we'd save. Archer's knees alone cost more than the yearly premiums for all four dogs. I bit the bullet. Worth it.

Archer's knees are $2500 a piece. Aria's emergent surgery was $3200. Archer's 24 hr trip to the ER was $1900. Faith's emergent surgery was $2100. Archer's Addison's was $1900 to diagnose. All in 18 months time.

My goodness.
I have to look into this Trupanion.
Thank you again.

Another thread I have been bad about updating :)

Archer is four weeks out of surgery and is doing well. So well in fact, that I have to keep him from doing too much. I continue with passive range of motion exercises for therapy 2-3 times per day. At this stage in his at home therapy he is getting 30-40 minute walks per day and climbing stairs. He is also walking over jump poles on the ground and performing figure 8's in order to force him to alternate which leg is dominant. Every week, his therapy adds something new to the mix and we continue to build on the therapy from the week before.

His two week checkup went very well. The vet was impressed with how well Archer was using his leg already and felt we could cancel the four week recheck unless Archer started having issues. He has not. The next step is a recheck at 8 weeks where they will sedate him for films to make sure that the bone is healed and the bone grafts have hardened. If all looks good at 8 weeks, he will clear Archer for his second surgery.

I am so glad for you and Archer that everything is going well!! It is a good thing that he was able to go into rehab pretty quickly, dont you think? They get so bored, even if they are in pain! He sounds like a real trooper, and he looks like such a sweetheart..no wonder they love him at the vet. He can be their poster-dog for ACL repair!!!

ARCHER UPDATE
8 weeks post op. He is doing well. I am really having to stay on top of him to keep his activity restricted as he wants to run, jump and play with Faith.

We are still doing PROM exercises 2-3 times daily, walking figure 8s and stepping over jump poles with gradual height increases. He is tolerating 30 minute walks with inclines/declines well and enjoying the extra TLC he receives with his daily massages. His final 8 week check up is July 19 where they will sedate him for Xrays to assess how well the bone has healed and to make sure his implants have not failed. Hoping for terrific news as it would mean he would be cleared for the TTA on his right. Keep us in your thoughts. Archer has been a tremendous trooper through this. I just love this boy

How wonderful that he is healing and progressing so well! I hope tomorrow's test come out just as well! :goodluck:

ARCHER UPDATE:
We received great news from the Vet today. Archer was cleared for his second surgery!!! The surgeon said the implants and bone graft healed nicely and he was very pleased with how well Archer was doing. During exam, he did find Archer's quadricep muscle in his left leg to be very tight, so I will be performing some more physical therapy, heat therapy and massage on him at home. We will also do cool laser therapy and acupuncture for two weeks with the hope that his muscle will relax, which we would want prior to the surgery on his right knee. Surgery is scheduled for August 30. Thank you for all your well wishes, love and prayers for my special boy ❤️
