Antibiotic-Resistant Staph Infection

An update to say that we saw the vet derm yesterday, and she was so pleased with how well Remy's staph infection is healing! His coat is looking fantastic, and there's only one tiny bump left on his neck that's nearly gone.

He's been on Zeniquin for 3 weeks now, and we'll finish the course (one more week). We can cut down medicated baths from 3x weekly to 1x, spot-treat that remaining bump with Purell hand sanitizer a few times a day, and will check in over the phone in a couple weeks to make sure he doesn't regress once off the antibiotic. He's going to be so excited to have string cheese and goat milk again soon.

Happy to say that we haven't seen any side effects (yay!) during the Zeniquin course. He had a liver panel recheck with our main vet last week, and his enzymes had increased a bit, unfortunately. (ALT at 434, up from 350 on 8/18, and AST at 154). Vet derm thinks it's unlikely that Zeniquin could have increased his enzymes, but it's a rare possibility. Main vet has us giving him 1000mg of milk thistle to support his liver currently, and we'll recheck his panel after he's been off Zeniquin for a month.

His liver levels were slow to come down earlier this year after antibiotics, so I imagine it'll take a few months to see them come back to normal. A liver biopsy is on the agenda during his neutering regardless, to have confirmation on copper storage disease one way or another!

I'm glad to hear it's improving for the most part. I think the milk thistle will probably help.
