Acute Liver Injury vs Copper Storage

there is some hepatopathy in Freyja’s family history more on the Sire side than of Melrae’s Dam.
I think the Doberman is still alive today at 10.
That's a relief anyway when he's still alive at 10. If it were on China's side I'd start worrying about Elroy too since they're both out of China.

I hope the numbers go back to normal soon so she can come home with you.

From the articles I have read, there is no max cap the AAFCO says is too high it only provides a min of how much copper must be in the food which is 7mg/kg.
If there is no cap, how do they come up with the minimum of 7mg? Maybe that's even too much. This is frightening. We don't know what's in our dog food anymore. What were you feeding before this happened?

So sorry to see this. I’ve been out of town and don’t do much internet on the phone. Know my thoughts are with you and your beloved girl. I’ll read the articles and write more when I get home.

Glad you might have some answers and hope she'll be on the mend soon! I believe there are a few threads around on DCF about copper content and dealing with this. Fortunately it looks like it can be managed with diet.

First off…
Thanks so much for y’all’s thoughts and concern, I don’t post to just post but feel as if y’all understand.

Spoke to vet today and he was thankful to know that Doberman hepatopathy copper storage was in her genes.

He immediately started her on Zinc to absorb the copper and Denamarin. Her liver values are coming down now. He stated there is no doubt what this issue is.

Her status has been upgraded from a guarded 50/50 to 75/25.

It’s crazy because when I think on it…Ragnar use to, at times, pee a bright colored urine and he would sometimes poop grayish poop. This indicated, to me that his liver wasn’t metabolizing fats too well….I would then switch his food thinking it was the food. I wonder and question if he had something like this and that’s why he was such an eater of everything…damn, I wish I would have put 2 and 2 together and known that Dobermans were high on the list for hepatopathy.

I'm glad it's figured out and things are getting so much better.

Don't ever put yourself there since you always took the very best care of him.

This is good to hear. Hopefully she continues to improve so that she can come home. I’m sure being home will help her too.

We do understand! All the information we share might save another pup, and we know very well how special our beautiful Dobes are to us. My naughty, sweet girl is curled into a tiny ball on the couch in the sun, and I know my heart would break if she wasn’t there. Thinking of you.

Agree. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who gives their pup an extra loving while sending our best wishes when we hear of someones troubles.

Freyja came home this afternoon…yay!!!

When she hit the back yard she did about 10 circles with her nub wagging the entire time.

Very happy- she looks really good and is in good spirits. She clings to me like glue and is constantly mouthing my hands as to say I missed you.

She is on a shit load of meds:
0515- Sucralfate to alleviate any stomach discomfort.
0730- feed hepatic food
Ursodiol
Pentoxifyline
Zinc
Cerenia
10:30- Sucralfate
1200- feed hepatic food
Vitamin K
Probiotic
1630- Sucralfate
1800- feed hepatic food
Ursodiol
Pentoxifyline
Zinc
2000- Denamarin

The kicker will be….have an appt with vet on Wednesday to check her liver values to see what they are doing. Hopefully they continue to trend down.

She is having some sporadic urinary incontinence, I am hopeful this is because of the wet food she is eating and then drinking water.

Thanks y’all….

Admin- can you please change the title of this to: Doberman copper storage induced hepatopathy.
