How tall is rubie?
My lab is maybe 23 inches (yeah, makes the 82 pounds that much more perplexing lol). You'd think it would be a disadvantage, but it's really not.
That said - keep your boy lean. The one in the first picture looks over weight. Just like our doberbeasts, labs are prone to...
Hopefully! Kaiser has 20+ pounds and way more agile on the lab. Lab still kicks his ass lol. Lab is like a little dozer/tank. An 82 pound one at that (how the hell that dog weighs 82 pounds is beyond me ... I figured he was low 70's because he's SO thin right now...). And believe it or not, my...
My lab does this .... Over well, anything really. Walk in the door after being out for 5 minutes? Lab-aroo. Grab the leash? Lab-aroo. Say the magical "outside" word? Lab-aroo. It was cute when he was little. Not so cute at 75 pounds and in the house. Bonus? He has some killer leg muscles.
I would definitely start with a pup, personally. So that the dog grows up not only with your existing dogs, but so that you can start training asap. The younger the new one learns it's place, the better.
Make vs female. That's tough. Since your goal is a playmate for the female, I'd personally...
It really does boil down to the actual dog. My old husky was never reliable off leash. He wasn't mean, though. He just liked to go greet *everyone* and every animal he saw and would take off after bunnies. I tried everything to get him to a point that he atleast had a recall, it was still really...
You did the very best for him that you possibly could under the circumstances. Because of YOU, he got to go home and enjoy some last few doggy pleasures.
While sad, there's really not a much better way to go. Doing something he loved, not hooked up to machines and whithering away. Outdoors...
Locally, I see very very few dogs with training collars. Even fewer that are actually under control. So I wish *more* people would use them, if it meant more trained dogs. I've lost count of how many times a dog has run up on us because it was either off leash (with no control from the owner...
I whole heartedly agree.
But ... There's always a but :)
Getting the average citizens on board with this would be HARD. They already bitch up a storm about how much disabled people use in resources (medical especially). As if we asked to be disabled! We get lectured on our use of assistance -...
Agreed. But who's going to pay for it?! That's the big problem and a large part of why the ADA is so loose on regulations. Sad fact is- most disabled person's struggle to meet basic needs, let alone pay for extra licensing requirements. And it would cost a lot to implement such a program.
Yes! Mini horses have been used as service animals for a LONG time. Up until more recently, the ADA applied only to dogs and minis. They removed minis in recent years.
Bonus to minis - larger, stronger build = better for physical support of larger person's. Longer life expectancy than large...
I just got into a lengthy conversation about this the other day.
Walking out of the grocery store, young Shepherdish looking dog comes out ... Clearly young, clearly untrained in even the most basic stuff - dog was literally tripping the person holding the leash. Think they were asked to leave...
I actually saw a c/d male recently in town. No clue where he belongs. He was ... Odd looking though. A little chubby, too, but just generally not proportioned well.
How old is he again?
Kaizers were short, *really* short for a long time and almost looked trimmed, but I know they weren't. It took a looooong time for them to really grow and even now, his whiskers are just short.
I really wonder if Quaaludes wouldn't work. Too bad they're illegal now :/
Do they use fentanyl in animals? That usually has a pretty heavy sedating factor, but I dunno about for Bogie lol. Stuff like that does the same thing to me - pain killers give me energy and actual sedatives make me...
