If protection training is something you are interested in, I strongly suggest getting him in with a trainer asap. Raising a protection dog is a bit different than raising a pet. It's never ever too early to start with a trainer. Most people make the mistake of waiting too long. A good trainer...

Honestly, it was a fluke. He showed the natural propensity, which not all dogs do, and we just built on his natural instincts. Being your first dog and first doberman, I'd get a trainer involved who trains protection before training things like that.

Definitely. There is no way he's that young. Kaizer was probably about 5 weeks when I got him. I'll add a picture to show just how different he looked than your boy does now (and he is bigger than the typical doberman due to being mixed).

Yes, you can allow hugs/kisses. You just have to train him to know to only do it on command. Kaizer gives "hugs". If you are standing and say "hug" he will put paws on shoulders and nuzzle/give kisses. But he knows he can only do it on command. I'll get a picture later of him doing it to pat...

If hubs wants the ears cropped (if it's even still an option pending age), is he willing to help with cleaning and posting? Another thought to consider - in *my* experience, floppy eared dogs are more approachable. Pointy ears are more deterring. I'm sure there's some elaborate reason behind...

Random photo of the day - 2018 - post yours!

Posted this in a thread earlier. But it's cute. Still working on them looking at ME and not the cookie lol.

Flop ears really aren't that different. Though I've had more ear injuries in my flop eared dogs. For the average pet owner - it's an aesthetic personal preference thing. I prefer cropped, but many others don't.

I need help. My Doberman mix is extremely aggressive.

And further medical testing. To rule out underlying causes. A general exam and blood work doesnt quite cut it here. The part that concerns me most is that he's lashing out at *you*. This is not a desirable trait in *any* breed. Even if he's part terrier, human agression to that degree is...

Blue is another brand I would avoid, personally. Diamond is ok, but there's better for comparable price.

Price will be a huge factor. You can easily spend $100+ a bag. Obviously, not everyone can afford that! But quality food is worth some added cost and you can find high grade foods for very reasonable (I pay $35 for a 40lb bag). It will also depend on the pup, you may have to try a fee before...

Yeah, you'll definitely want to change that. Purina in general is a pretty crappy brand. Same with hills/science diet, eukanuba, iams. Avoid all of them. Taste of the wild, Victor, earthborn, orijen, acana, Fromm ... All good brands at varying price points. There are tons more, those are just...

Prime will be your best friend. And dangerous. Lol. Food. Start with whatever they're already feeding, but odds are youre going to want to switch to a better quality food. Give him about a week or so to settle in and then transition over slowly to avoid stomach upset. A good quality food...

Soooo many factors. He's of unknown mix. Some dogs just grey young. (See my last picture of the lab in Random thread ... he's 4 1/2 :p ) stress can cause greying, too. So nah, I wouldnt say he's older based on that. Possible? For sure. But that would require a vet to better determine.

How old is he? Cropping can usually be done up to 12 weeks, if I remember correctly. Some vets will even go to 14.

Training - I'll defer to others on this. I couldn't explain my methods if I tried. But what I can tell you is - stick with it. Even when you feel like it's a lost cause. They WILL catch on, eventually. But be warned, makes tend to be slower to mature in pretty much every way. But if you stick...

    Male/female Doberman pup

Yup. I'm 5'3 and just over 100 pounds. Kaizer outweighs me (for the sake of clarity - he is not pure doberman). One sharp "hey" is all it takes. The lab is 82-88 pounds, depending on time of year. He's not fat, though, but solid muscle. Here again - a sharp "hey" is all it takes. They can be in...

Unfortunately, with his issues, you really can not allow this anymore. Even out in the middle of nowhere. There is *always* a chance of running into another person. Always.

Puppy classes are great. But do your research. Dobes are not like training other dogs. You need a place that understands working breeds and has solid rules in place. A bad interaction with another dog at training can lead to a lifelong issue (Bri has experience with this). The typical pet store...
