Happy Birthday to me! Ugh....Cheyennes wound

It looks clean and healing well, but boy, that was a deep wound!
I know. And shes been SO good! I clean it every morning and night and she patiently stands for me. I have a huge syringe of antibiotics that I mix with applesauce and give her twice a day, and she takes it like a champ! But I can barely look at the wound without a bit of panic. I'm happy that its healing, and not infected, but geez, its scary to look at!:anonymous :

So on February 12th, Cheyennes wound looked like this. Still open but pretty dry and not bad looking, right?

It look like that yesterday morning, too. Couple of hours later it look like this.

I was shocked to see that it looked like it was bleeding! Then it hit me that she may have bumped it or something. Texted a picture to the vet, who said to just wipe off.

By last night, it looked like this. Being almost zero last night, I didn't want to get it wet. So we just left it. It looks like it was scabbing over. Not sure if that's a good sign or not. I mean, I don't know if it's closing up too fast on the outside? For as quickly as it started to heal in the first couple of days, now, it seems like it's taking forever. But it was deep. So I guess this is normal.:confused-alt:

I bet she did bump it again and like you said, when it was so deep it probably doesn't take much.

Good plan not to get it wet when it's cold like that.

Apart from the gore after the bump it looks like it's making good progress considering how deep the wound was to start with. You can see good healing margins on the last pic. :thumbsup2:

Thanks, Jan! It makes me feel better to have another opinion.

I'm glad to hear you say that cuz sometimes all I can see is the gore and I get discouraged! :bag:

Cheyenne's wound is healing well! I was cleaning it day and night and applying the Salve that the vet gave me, but I haven't done that for a few days now. It started when it was bitter cold, and I didn't want to get it wet. It was doing well, so I didn't want to fool with it. I've been kind of itching to do that now, but just thought there's such a nice scab on there that I didn't want to mess with it or peel it off. We are going to have a beautiful weekend with highs near 50° or over so it might be a good time to try washing it. What do you think? Should I leave it or clean it up a bit? I was just afraid that it would close up with some scab inside or something. But I think we're past that. Now she just needs to grow the hair back so she looks back to normal! I'm thrilled that we got through this without any infection. That was our biggest worry.

It granulating in nicely. I would definitely clean it up though like you were doing.

Give that sweet girl a muzzle rub for me.

Yea? You think I should kind of wash it up?? I can do that. I just wasn't sure if it would open it up again by softening it. This weekend would be a good time because it will be warm, so, yea, I can do that. And then apply the salve again.

My reason for giving it a wash would be to keep the scab a bit moist in case she rubs her face against anything. That way it would peel off easily vs getting torn off if it’s crusty.

It is looking good though!

Wounds itch as they heal.
Possible she rubbed it against a post or something?

Yeah, I'm sure that's what she did. In fact, I think that's how she got the wound in the first place! :groan:

Last night I wiped it gently with a warm cotton swab and it kind of softened up the scab and took it off. I put the Salve back on again. I was a little worried about washing off that scab. But I guess it's okay. It probably could have used a little washing. It just worried me because then it was kind of an open wound again. But putting the Salve on I'm sure was helpful. It's come a long way. When I think of how it looked in the beginning, it turns my stomach and Panic mode was high. :wideyed: Healing is a process. And sometimes it can Amaze you. :thumbsup2:

This morning, sfter another wipe down. And before I put the salve on.

Looking good. Sometimes we need to debride the damaged crusty tissue in order to help the healing process.
It’s healing from the inside out (granulation) so the cleaning and then always applying the salve aids in the process.
Do you have the therapeutic face masks you could place on her to prevent her reinjuring it when she rubs it? The fabric is breathable.

As I was catching up on this thread, I was thinking how lucky it is that the wound didn't happen in summer.
My daughter said the same thing. They do make an ointment called SWAT that you can put on wounds that keeps the Flies off. If that's what you were thinking of. But I think now was the best time anyway. ;) Besides that, she'll be healed enough to ride her as soon as the weather warms up too. :D

Here's tonight's photo of Cheyennes eye. Almost the same as a few days ago.

I'm wiping it down with day and night, mostly with plain warm water. And then applying the salve.

Its almost gone and I'm wondering if I can use this? Sigh, I keep forgetting to call and ask the vet so as long as I'm posting, maybe @Tropicalbri's @Ddski5 or anyone with medical knowledge would know?

The vet gave me this (for Cheyenne again! :wideyed: ) when she had some abrasions on the underside of her tail. I wouldn't spray it on her eye, of course, but is it the right kind of medicine for it?

Totally safe to use. The best I have found is the Vetericyn spray. We started dispensing it more now than the Betagen spray.
