Critters and wildlife in your area - post your pics

No photos but early yesterday morning Elroy was trying to let me know he was having tummy troubles. I didn't get up in time so the poor guy had an accident in the kitchen. I cleaned it up and put it in a bag that hubby set outside near the door. He went to take it to the dumpster a couple hours later and it was gone, which baffles me since I have no idea what appeal there would be with something like that. He figures it was a fox since they are always running back and forth by the house. Then this morning the bird bath was knocked over and again he thinks maybe a fox tried to jump up there to get a drink of water. I know a bear or deer could easily just stand there and get a drink.

The Pair of juvenile Great Horned Owls hatched and living in the forest where we walk nearby appear to be doing ok.

They are intrigued by Bonnie and appear to be interested in my sorry imitations of adult calls: soft low hoots (which is sort of odd from these big birds...) its more like cooing of a mourning dove almost...

or will reply to imitations of juvenile begging calls, with same.

They will fly from perch to perch following Bonnie...who is interested in gopher holes.

I've seen owls and raptors circling over, almost as if cooperative hunting with coyotes hunting mice late in the day in grass lands in the suburban areas of open space preserves...or maybe just looking for a lucky catch of a bunny spooked into a dash.

I wonder if thats an inherited trait or a learned behavior?

When our daughter was in town last week we were sitting on the back deck after dinner when she heard an owl. Merlin App said it was a Great Horned Owl. Her hearing is much better than ours as I didn't catch it until she told me! 🙁 I told her I've been wanting to see an owl so bad and they've probably been right out back all the while!

Okay, I discovered this morning that skunks do not need to lift their tails to spray, and, they can spray SIDEWAYS. I won't say much more, but, I hope you never get, not only one skunk but 2, stuck in a "Squirrelinator" trap.
I had to look that up: Squirrelinator...

Looks like a crab pot.
How DID you get them out?
Throw a blanket over the whole thing?

Well, It was early in the morning, and my brain wasn't engaged. They seemed pretty docile, and I was a bit away from the house, I'd been walking the dogs back to the house. I figured I'd just undo the top, BIG mistake, but I got it opened, but got my forearm sprayed, my watch band will never be the same. I've had a skunk caught in the past in a Havaheart trap, but my brain was engaged then and I did cover the cage with a tarp, and was able to lock the door open, without incident.

I sometimes have a problem thinking things through, and just act, it's gonna be the death of me.

I quick stepped it to the house yesterday, mixed up some dish soap, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and scrubbed my forearm and watch. Worked great on my arm, the watch band not so much, even after soaking and scrubbing. Watch band is silicone, and easily replaced.

They can also temporarily blind you if they hit your eyes. Happened to my son's dog!
My BC got hit square in the face, a few years ago, luckily it didn't hit her eyes, just the top of her muzzle. I didn't even see the skunk, but saw her run up to the house real quick and start throwing up. I had an inkling what happened, rinsed off her face right quick and immediately did the soap/baking soda/peroxide mix on her, and it took 99% of the smell away. Works best if done immediately. I've heard of a dog, up here somewhere, dying because it got a good spray right in it's face.

Good tip, thx!
Gonna add that to the "dobe first aid kit/shelf..."

This morning when hubby walked down to get the paper there was a skunk at the end of the driveway that didn't want to move. He tried to stomp at it and it raised it's tail but it was facing him. He decided to just skirt way around it and get the paper anyway. I would have personally turned around and got the paper later.
