Nasal Lump

Hi all,

It’s been 6 years since we got Zara and 6 years since I’ve posted here. In this time, we’ve added another Doberman pup to the family named Khaleesi. I hope you’re all doing well in life and that your Dobermans are bringing you true friendship and happiness.

We noted in July 2024 that our 6 year old girl, Zara, had a lump on the top of her nose. Maybe the size of a toonie (Canadian here, “eh”). It’s mostly soft. Pictures will be provided. She seems to always have a little bit of a wet/runny nose, the odd sneezing fits (but she’s allergic to EVERYTHING) and a little bit heavier if breathing mostly noted at night when she’s on the bed having some movie time snuggles. Maybe it’s the position she’s in, unsure. That’s mostly it for her symptoms other than the physical lump too. She is still tail wagging, 11/10 excited for walks, eating, playing and otherwise seems her normal self.

She went to the vet and did a culture swab. Came back positive. We did 2 weeks of daily
Doxycycline with no visible changes. We’re now 50%, or slightly more, into a 2 week run with Clavaseptin. Again, doesn’t seem like anything is improving.

I’m nervous for my girl and being this far into antibiotics on round 2 of them, will be phoning to make another appointment and I’d imagine a biopsy. It’s my understanding that nasal cancers/tumors make up 1-2% of all canine cancers, but of that 1-2%, 80% are malignant.

Does anyone have any experience, knowledge or advice on this? See some pictures below. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to discuss in here.

I don't have any experience with these nasal lumps. I know that you posted @AresMyDobie thread looking for an answer. Your dogs are beautiful and I pray the best for you and your dog.

::Not a Vet disclaimer::

They swabbed and cultured the nasal passages and drainage?

Did they say what the culture results were? As in, did they find bacterial infection and are treating with antibiotics it is sensitive to? Or they didn't find anything and they're using antibiotics proactively to treat based on symptoms?

Is the lump draining? Is it growing? Is there a pimple-like "head" on it? It looks like there might be in one of the pics.

Depending on the answers to those questions, biopsy and/or imaging (xray, ultrasound to start) might be warranted.

I don't want you to hear that she needs these immediately and you should prepare for the worst, but that this is a possible course to diagnosing what this lump is.

Hugs for you and your girls!

Hi,

Thanks for the response. No pus coming out, just a runny/watery nose. As for the pimple on it, unsure but doesn’t overly seem it based off memory. Lump isn’t draining. I don’t believe it’s gotten smaller and unsure on bigger - but I also don’t believe so.

Her tests came back with “heavy growth” of staphylococcus pseudintermedius. We’ve done two weeks of doxycycline with no results and now are one week into a two week prescription of Clavaseptin.

Oof, poor girl.
Are her symptoms only the sneezing and runny nose?

I guess for now I'd be asking, is the lump related, is it messing with her nasal passage on that side and what's the plan if we get to the end of this course of antibiotics and there's no improvement.

I'm sorry I don't have anything more satisfying for you.

Since they found staph (did they swab right on the bump or in the drainage?), you could consider this:

Topical Treatment

Most of the veterinary dermatologic literature supports the use of 2% to 4% chlorhexidine as the most effective topical antiseptic agent against S pseudintermedius,
Read full article here where it does also talk about using chlorhexidine in conjunction with oral antibiotics, it can't hurt to add a topical: https://todaysveterinarypractice.com/dermatology/treating-resistant-skin-infections-in-dogs/

If you haven't used chlorhexidine before, it is great stuff to have on hand with dogs. I bought a bottle for Kaiser, but it can be used on humans too, and it's come in handy multiple times.

Other ideas to bring to your vet: Is it possible she hit her snout on something? Could it be a hemotoma? Maybe it just takes time for the bump to resolve itself. Is it possible the drainage is unrelated and just summer time allergies? If it feels soft, it could also be a fatty lump which Dobermans tend to get as they age...Kaiser was around 6 when he developed a fatty lump on his torso.

I knew I would forget to mention this, the picture with the exposed insulation, could that be a problem? Maybe she has been sniffing at it?
