You were extremely fortunate. I had a Dobe 20 years ago, who survived surgery...I used to take him to a school yard to run in the am, and I watched him scarf up "something" but did not know what it was. I did not know about the peroxide bit - to get him to throw it up, so made an appointment with the vet. That next day, I was closing up the garbage bag, he came over and scarfed a corn cob off the top of the garbage. Just like a snake! Sucked it right in, no problem. I knew THAT was not going to come up, OR out.
Got him to the vet and the corn cob was clear as day on the x ray....along with some dark thing that had moved into his intestinal track.
And when you opt for surgery; they clearly tell you there is no guarantee...so we were freaking out. Afterward, they brought out a baggie with a corn cob, and a leather batting glove! The short gloves with no fingers.
After that dog, I became dillegent with LEAVE IT LEAVE IT LEAVE IT!!!!!!
Fast forward to last year...."Glory" was a year old, and had just started to have freedom in the house. Crate while we were not home, but I was at work, and my husband was cutting the grass.....he sends me this photo while I am at work.
I asked if she knew when she did it; his response was "I have been outside for 3 hours". ACK!!!!!!! WHY wasn't she in the crate!!! You can imagine the frustration.....so I instructed him to give her peroxide, nothing came up, just foamy wretch. So when I got home, I gave her a glob of coconut oil in sloopy canned food with a ton of water. I figured I would give it the night, and see what happened before going to the ER.
The only thing she pooped out during the night, were foam balls, and small pieces of leather. Gave her same thing in the am...but more coconut oil - more leather came out along with some poop, so I knew we were getting somewhere. The only reason I did not take her to the ER, was I pieced the couch back together (Not with what came out of her, but I did pay attention!) and she hadn't eaten that much.
I don't have pet insurance, and we are on a fixed income...but IF another day went by and I felt something was lodged in there, off we would have gone....I figure that is what credit cards are for

Looking at that couch just makes you wonder what they are thinking. She went through all the layers of covering to get through to the leather and then to the fluff. It's not even a stuffed toy that they might get the urge to bite through because it's in their mouth anyway, it's a totally immovable object! But ya, 3 hours of lawn mowing is plenty of time for them to get adventurous. Coconut oil is brilliant! My Kaiser can't handle very fatty foods, so coconut oil would definitely get his bowels moving even faster.
