Chew Toys a Doberman likes that won’t hurt them?

My first Doberman had all kinds of toys he played with without destroying them in one sitting. Max is totally different. He tries to destroy everything. We had to take away all stuffed toys. He rips them open and pulls the stuffing out, pulls all the surface fuzz off, or rips out any squeakers and tries to eat them.

I gave my previous Doberman rawhides, but he chewed on them without eating them. I doubt Max will do that and reading all the horror stories decided not to try.

I went to PetSmart and got a Dentley's Pork Femur Bone and an Elk antler. The pork femur isn’t going to work. In less than 20 minutes he had it busted apart and it was splintering. He didn’t really seem interested in the Elk Antler but will chew on it if he doesn’t have anything else. It looks like it will splinter or crumble.

The wife came home from the store the other night with a three pack of “Cadet” Brand stuffed shin bones. They are stuffed with something that is “Peanut Butter Flavor”. He loves these things. He was laser focused and worked diligently until he had most of the stuff out of the center, since then he has been chewing on the bone. But these suckers are hard. I’m afraid it may damage his teeth. Am I worrying too much about that?

He has a Kong and some other rubber toys, but they don’t seem to hold his interest very long.

Is there nothing I can get him that is safe, can hold his attention, and won’t be destroyed in minutes?

Please, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Max is almost 7 months old and over 70Lbs.

You do have to worry about their teeth with weight bearing bones. Knuckle bones are best. Poultry necks, wings, feet are also safe and are full of glucosamine which is great for the joints. I like raw but it's a summer time thing and it's still gross so dehydrated raw is a good option. Their slobber makes it wet so it's still an outside chew but less ew, until you see them toss it around :tongueclosed:

You need to make the Kong more interesting, like with a smear of peanut butter. If your Doberman is greedy like mine, he will want the item more if you take it away from him :D I find them invaluable. Banana and peanut butter mixed with ground flax is a favorite. Even their own kibble. Make him rely on it for his meals if you're a kibble feeder.

I like Nylabones the most. The Elk antler was not popular until I stored mine with bully sticks to make him like it more, because he loves bully sticks and bison ears too. I recently added this:

Gorilla Chews

To keep his toys interesting, you have to to put them away too, so they kinda forget.

Timing of a chew is also important. After exercise is best and new chews must always be supervised to ensure nothing breaks up.

I'm also a big supporter of raw or lightly dehydrated necks, wings, feet etc as well as nylabones(Jasmine has 5, 3 of which are for extreme chewers) and kongs (she has 2 that she gets fed from for every meal every day).

For such greedy gluttons, dobe's stomachs sure are weak little snowflakes.
I remember our first puppy class with other puppies. Everyone was afraid of Kaiser. He was about 5 months old but still big enough to be scary. We were walking in a circle and he pooped while walking :spit: Then all the dogs started pooping

He was a nervous pooper for a few classes  Thank god he grew out of that!

The only toys my two are allowed are solid rubber balls, anything else, they destroy and ingest it.
Thank goodness they quit chewing Sheetrock, couches, beds and books. They love to swipe paper towels though. Not sure they will ever outgrow that.

No kidding! I dropped a two sheet paper on the floor and before I could pick it up Max swooped in, snagged it and took off for the living room with me hot on his trail. He chewed it as he ran and swallowed it before I caught him.

He sleeps beside the bed. The wife heard a noise the other night and he was chewing on the side of the bed!

He's lucky he's cute.

Another Dobie thing! I was wiping Kaiser's mouth yesterday and as I finished he snagged a corner and started chewing. I was standing right by his treats cabinet so I opened it and said 'drop it' with a treat ready for him. He swallowed it and I was surprised because this usually works. In that split second he stole the treat from my fingers and ran off! Couldn't you just :bat:

We rely heavily on nylabones - they will get itty bitty tiny flakes shorn off (that will get stuck on blankets for forever) but nothing that would cause an obstruction. Chuck-it balls are actually pretty sturdy BUUUUUUUT Rubie only gets it when we're playing and isn't allowed to just have it around the house to chew on.

And no, you're right to be thinking about his teeth - Rubie chipped a molar at some point on something so we just keep an eye on it to make sure there isn't too much build-up happening.

Benebones, benebones and benebones! And maybe a kong or two.

My dude went thru anything and everything until @AresMyDobie recomended to me the benebone, I now have 5 of them and that’s pretty much all he’s allowed to chew on. They flake off into small rice grain pieces at the most and I’ve had the oldest one now for about 4 or 5 months now and he hasn’t destroyed it. But he has 5 of them so he doesn’t chew on just one the entire time.

Nero has some pork femur, some JK ball and rings, an elk antler and a kong. Oh and a nylabone ring. Anything that gets too chewed up gets thrown away. He really enjoyed the knuckle bone but went through it too fast and chips came off. Stuffed toys also get destroyed at an astonishing rate. Hats.... Dog likes to chew on hats... (WTF?)

Just signed onto this forum for a few questions and this subject is one of them. Yesterday bought Nylabones for our 6 month old. Bought the largest sold. Gave her one in the car as I had several errands to run. She had it devoured before out got out of the shopping complex. I need a recommendation for something that will keep her busy most of the day while at work and is safe. Please help!

It seems the one you bought was intended to be eaten, more like a treat? Their DuraBones are what we buy and are not treats but more of a hard plastic that will flake off but not chunck off.

Are you kenneling her? We don’t usually leave them with anything when we are gone. But they have an assortment of things to chew when they are out.
