Hi all, I know I ghost a lot and I don't mean to. Here's what Vex and I have been up to this past year. We tried for our EL (Entry Level) in the first annual APPDA Nationals in New Jersey last month. We did not pass due to point loss in protection, but we had a strong showing for the breed in the sport. We have some cleaning up to do in training, but we will be going for our EL again in April in New York and then onto the L1 (Level 1). So far, a Doberman has not passed in this sport. We hope to be the first.

Judge: Amanda Caldron
Steward: Dez Lynch
Hosted by Jersey K9

Obedience first, we only lost 4 points total for a 46/50. Similar to PSA PDC with decoy distraction for the first exercise.

Protection is,
Civil Scenario with neutrality, then alert, attack, post alert
Courage Test with plastic noise maker bat (up to 4 hits allowed and frontal)
Neutral greeting with escape bite (bag snatch)

Just for a breakdown.

What a good looking dog!

Pardon my ignorance... but why hasn't a Doberman passed in this sport, before?

You guys got this!!!

No problem. This sport is super hard. There is pressure that other sports in the upper levels don't have and that's just in the EL. Also, it is brand new. It was organized last year and has already grown internationally and new clubs every week.

The goal of the sport is first, safety in these high pressure situations. There are no prey movements unless it is the bag snatch scenario. No running and screaming. Completely neutral until teeth touch the suit, then the pressure is on.

Ill explain more later when I get home. Hope that gives you something, I know I'm all over the place right now.

Wow, are the dogs allowed to bite anywhere? Lol, even wearing armor I couldn't be a helper! Eeek!

Yes, dogs may bite anywhere on the body as long as they commit to the grip. Grip is judged as well so legs and bicep/tricep area are most popular. But, there is no target presented. The dogs take the target. Arms are against the body on the decoys. You'd be amazed on how many dogs blow by the decoy just walking and talking normally.

Your boy's like: "You come at me with a child's fat bat? Take that!" Neat stuff, this sport/training. I'd like to learn more. I haven't been too enthusiastic about IPO training and am drawn more to something more protection oriented.

Good on you for working to make progress in the modern Doberman being more respected!

Just a question: Are the dogs judged on getting full-mouth grips?

I just keep going back to look at those pics. Awesome! I too would be interested in knowing more about this Association, and would love to see more pics. Is it classed as a sport or is it a competition for dogs working in protection/patrolling?

It is a sport that is geared towards realistic scenarios. It was written with police service dogs in mind and some PSDs compete. Let’s put it this way, no matter what level you compete in, if you don’t have a bond with your dog, you won’t advance. We want to see partnership, not a rigidly trained dog.

The sport is designed to show you all the holes in your training. Many can’t believe Vex and I didn’t pass, but I know plain as day what I didn’t show him and got feedback from the decoy we failed to neutralize. Only in the EL is there a separate obedience routine. The rest is integrated with protection.

@Oh Little Oji Start a new club! APPDA supports her clubs and helps you every time you need it! If interested in doing so, Pm me and it’s open to anyone wanting to start a club.

That is actually half tempting. Many folks here know I hardly ever drive a car, and don't like driving far; but there is a large park complex within running distance, or maybe a 3-4 mile drive from here that – if there were no protests from people around here or the park staff – we could meet and train.

This might also fit with how I have never taken training instruction from anyone – have always done my own training.
