Just today I saw a HUGE groundhog (I think lol) and took a pic. But it's on my camera.
But we have Deer, Turkey, Snakes, Raccoon, Possum, Coyotes, oh man, too much to count lol.

I've never seen one...ever! So I had to study that for a bit! I see that is a dime so they are not usually very large? That's a bit scary in itself. I thought they were big, like a Wolf Spider. Something you could easily see.
The hourglass is very visible though! Very interesting, dangerous spider! Sometimes I think I will live right here the rest of my life! LOL! No further North because of the cold and no further South because of critters I don't want to confront! 
I think I heard black widows live in pretty much every state, except maybe Alaska. I just don't think you see them too often though.

Most of the time they are pretty small. That in itself makes them even more dangerous because they aren't usually seen. Like in the square hole of cinder-blocks..... grab one without looking in the hole first and you will likely get bit. Same with a pile of brush or limbs you might be cleaning up. If this one hadn't been feeding, I probably never would have seen her.
I had taken some of our cushions off our chairs on the deck when it started to rain and laid them on the floor right inside the door. Today I decided that I wasn't going to even put them back outside. It was time to put them away for the season. When I picked them up this is what I found! LOL
At first I thought he was not alive, but he was! Picked him up in the basket and put him outside where I hope he can find a warm spot. I don't even know where these guys go over winter. We have a lot of them on our deck all summer and one or two always end up in the house through an open door.

I think they bury themselves underground for the winter, but I'm not sure of that either. I do know they go into a form of hibernation anyway.
Boy, I haven't seen one of these guys like, in Forever. At least since we've been here and that's been 15 years. I've seen a couple of our old house though. I was walking the dogs just now and almost stepped on the little guy. Picked him up by the tail and brought him back to the barn so I can get a picture. Of course I didn't have my phone with me. Never fails LOL so I took a picture and put him out in some tall grass to do whatever they do.

Sort of an amusing story, but one of my classmates went and picked some shells off the beach last weekend. She got them back to her room and decided a day or two later to rinse the bigger ones off because they were sort of sandy and dirty. After she washed them she wrapped them in a towel to dry off and the next morning the towel was moving. It turns out those shells were the home to hermit crabs so she panicked and asked me what to do after she put a little tap water into a coffee cup with the shells to keep them alive. Of course they came from the ocean so I thought they wouldn't live, but they did make it until last night so she made a special trip back to the beach to release them and it seems they were fine. I would have never believed it but she took some video when she released them and they were indeed still active.
Anyway, it became the class joke when everyone was talking about "Kathy's crabs".
Interesting! My parents got land crabs for our kids when they were small. I thought they were pretty cool. Our one grandson has one now too. He's had him for quite a while. I wonder if there's a difference between ones that survive in the ocean salt water and fresh water. It's interesting that Kathys made it in tap water. I don't know that much about them but when the kids had them I thought they were pretty cool. We would pick up new shells and watch them switch. Really cute.
There's always a confusion between the saltwater hermit crabs that live in shells in the water (like in an aquarium without coming out) and the pet hermit crabs you can buy in the pet shop for the kids. She posted a video of their release but it's set to friends only so I can't share it.

I've had both land and aquatic hermies, amusing and cute little things! They are indeed different, even to the naked eye. Did you know hermits have never bred in captivity? All of those you see in stores or as pets at houses were once living free in the wild.
An interesting story, but a restaurant I worked at served oysters on the half shell and they would be kept practically frozen for transport up until about to be served. Well a poor hermit crab got tossed in the mix, I just so happened to be standing around and noticed him as a tray of oysters were being prepared. Everyone said he was dead, but he was wrapped tightly up in his shell and I've seen dead hermits... they immediately fall out. I fetched sea water as this was a tikibar on the beach and put him in it. Over the course of the night, he unfroze and came back to life. No one could believe it. After about four or five hours he was out and moving around. I released him into the lagoon before I left home for work!

Picked up this little guy recently, must have gotten washed out during the torrential rains last week. Would love to reunite it with its family (assuming I could find the pond) but it's just way to skinny at 7kgs. Currently eating massive quantities of willow, and will unfortunately have to stay in care for probably a year as it is so young.
