Walks

When did you take your Doberman pup out for walks in your neighborhood?

Breeder told me to wait until she was fully vaccinated. We’ve only stayed in our yard, met neighbors, get to see the cars drive by, and gone to mil to meet her dog and use her yard. She’s met a ton of people and 1 dog, which has gone very well.

We do live in a nice suburban area and I would only hope all the dogs here are vaccinated.

Vet said take her out after 2nd shot series to walk sidewalks. I didn’t do that as I’m worried about Parvo. And we know how I feel about me vet…

I know some people like @Rits have taken them out to see the world at a young age by carrying the pup to the dog-friendly big box store like Lowes or TSC put them in a basket and go up and down the aisle, not letting their feet hit the ground.

If she's had 2 Parvo shots, she "should" be safe. I felt the same way though, it's nerve wracking to try to decide what's best. I live in a tiny town and there are loose pets and feral dogs that trot up and down most every street in town and the vet did say that Parvo had been on an uptick that year locally (2019). I pretty much chickened out and just took her places in the car or truck, parked in parking lots like Wal Mart and let her see & hear activities from there. And at Tractor Supply and I parked at the dog park to let her watch that activity. I would bet you would be just fine, but I totally understand your concern. Also I had the advantage of being on fenced acreage and surrounded by forest so I could do all the exercise I wanted without meeting dogs or even walking on the same path as other dogs.

Thank you :)

We get our hard fenced in 2 weeks and I can’t wait. Mil has 2 acres so we run around there and play almsot everyday too.

My friends pup passes of parvovirus years ago and that scared the crap out of me.

I need to take her in the car more often, but she goes feral for the first few minutes in the car.

She lives sitting in our front yard to the arch people, cars, and greet the ups and mailman. So I figure she’s doing ok and we have 1 more month of this.

I wouldn't walk in public places until she's had all her shots. You can however safely socialize by sitting in a car in parking lots of stores by the front door or at public parks on a busy day. Dog class is generally safe too once they've had their first vaccine AND a week after AND the facility requires dogs to be up to date on vaccinations. I have taken my young puppies and let them sit in a cart on a towel. I wipe down the cart beforehand with a bleach mixture to kill any parvo.

Does she ride in a crate in the car? That would keep her contained and feel safe. The best way to get them used to car rides is start now while they are young and go for short frequent trips.

Thanks! Good ideas.

She does both and your right crate would be smarter and safer.

I'm pretty paranoid of parvo since it's so devastating so I either carry them or put them in a cart until they're fully vaccinated, as stated. Pavement is definitely safer than soft surfaces but it can still be out there.

Yes me too and I’m just trying to make sure she gets what she needs. We did some pet stores today and the state park, I held her heavy butt. She loved it.

I’ll wait for any walks until she’s fully vaccinated just not worth the risk. Thanks for all the input guys!

Happy Holidays!

We also didn't take our dog for walks until she was fully vaccinated. It was worth it because later we could go anywhere without worrying. I checked petsylife and found dog beaches and other entertainment places for dogs in our area, and we began our journey. Though we have a yard where our dog can run, sometimes it is good to go somewhere together.
