Responsible Pet Owners Alliance of Texas has joined the groups listed below in recognizing "K9 Veterans Day" to honor our military service dogs, commonly called war dogs. What better city to kick off statewide celebrations than San Antonio: "Military City USA!" It is a national campaign with the date set for Saturday, March 13, 2010.

This is in keeping with our goal to promote the human/animal bond and take whatever steps necessary to preserve our historic relationship with animals. Just talk to any trainer of military dogs about that relationship. It's indescribable. They serve together in the US and foreign countries protecting the freedoms and liberties that we all take for granted. It's time the K9 Veterans have their day! Anti-breeding legislation now threatens the very existence of all working dogs in the future with the loss of gene pools.

Rick White, retired military Vietnam Veteran and founder of San Antonio Ferret Enthusiasts, will chair our K9 Veterans Day Committee. If you want to serve on the committee or help in any way with suggestions, participation or to organize something in your area contact: [email protected] .

Excerpts from the website:
Welcome to the home of the effort to create K9 Veterans Day, in honor of all
the dogs of all our wars. They served to save, and they deserve to be
remembered.

Just one short year ago we launched our effort to create K9 Veterans Day
with the help of this web site, the encouragement of those who care, and the
belief that what we are setting out to do, is simply the right thing to do.
After all, the dogs bled and died in defense of this great place that we
call home, and always, and in all ways they did us all proud. And they
never asked for anything more than food, water, and love. They deserve, at
the very least, a day put aside each year from now on, to remind people that
dogs are also Veterans, and to say that we appreciate their service.

In the beginning war dogs meant military dogs. Today, because of the war
on terror, and the ongoing threat to our homeland, more dogs than ever are
involved with the war. Private Search and Rescue dogs were some of the
first on the scene at ground zero, finding fallen firemen. Police dogs were
there too, and many more, with some giving their lives in the attack. And
now Customs dogs are in the fight, and so are Border Patrol Dogs, FBI Dogs,
Secret Service Dogs, and even Therapy Dogs, as they comfort the wounded. So
this effort truly has as it's goal the honoring of all the dogs, of all our
wars.
