Slat mill build

Still running for food reward but better each time. Blaze runs down and jumps up on it fir me to hook him up, and he is ready. Picasso is starting to jump up but still needs help occasionally but still not running just making it go a slow walk. Here is a short video of one of Blaze’s first sessions learning to run for food.

This is awesome. Im so jealous! I don’t even have a good place to put one of these, they are too big. Did you come up with this on your own?

Update this thread once the dogs get the hang of it.
A buddy of mine that trains drug dogs for law enforcement has one at his training facility, I always wanted to buy one but they run around $2000-$3000 dollars. I decided to build one so I just start looking at pictures online and kind of decided how I would build it.

That's incredible! Great job!

They aren't cheap...daughter has been looking at one for her place. Mind sharing your final cost and how long it took from start to finish?
I am a foreman for a Mechanical Contractor in KC doing sheetmetal and welding so I buy a lot thru our supply house. That saves me quite a bit. But I would estimate if you went to a Home Depot or Lowe’s for hardware probably looking at around $750-$800 just for materials. Some stuff like the little wheels (tool planet) and the rubber sheeting to make the belt that holds the slats together, you would have to find elsewhere.
I worked on it a little bit at a time between work and my dog training schedule but probably more than 40 man hours in labor.

Thanks for adding the info here. You might have just found a side business:thumbsup2: The way you personalized with your training company logo on the side (plexiglass?) brought the whole thing together and looks very professional.

A hefty savings...even figuring in the man hours!!!

Glad you put that in there....I was gonna ask if any of it is welded.... if so...how you manged that.

It's all nut and blot...or is there some welding on it?

It's a good looking piece of equipment....and since you built......you KNOW the quality in the equipment.

Doh...I just noticed the welds:facepalm:

I also have some serious gym rat envy going on when I look at the pics.....my home gym is crammed in my daughter's basement....a nine hour drive away....right now. I get a bit green eyed looking past the dog equipment when I look at the pics.

Awesome work! Looks really sharp! Ive always been a supporter of slat mills. Doggy powered. They dont have to run if they don't want to, unlike some people think when they see a dog going full out in happy glory.

Careful now, in some circles you are on your way to being a dog fighter.

I love my home gym it is slowly taking over my basement. Lol it used to just be the room you see behind where my half rack, Smith machine and dumbbell racks are. But I extended it out 16 more feet after moving all the snake cages out to my son’s house. Gave me room to move out the treadmill, exercise bike, curling bench, dumbbell bench and slat mill.

I’ve never even heard of one of these before.
Looks like it works awesome!
On the plus plus side, if there’s ever a SHTF scenario, with a couple of mods they can create electricity for ya! :)

How cool is that!

That's great that you have access to the materials and equipment. I love when I see online video's like "Make your own wooden wedding band for free!" and then proceed to show a master wood worker using his $20k in machinery to do such

It takes over like moss....it's a slow creep...... til one day you realize you can't really maneuver around the "gym".

I started asking for my daughter.......but I'm seriously going to get my husband on doing a concept drawing for the slat trainer so we can set it up once we settle in a house again. Bam has to crate when I use my dread mill or Max trainer....he wants to get on with me....that slat mill would be the perfect solution!!

And uhhh....

SNAKE CAGES????? WOW

I was wanting hubs to build one of these in Roatán so the twins could do free run during rainy season. I like that they can go at whatever pace they want and stop when they want.

Very awesome @Doberman Gang

5 years ago still had 3 snake cages and you can see three Doberman’s all out together. Miss those days!!!

I have the Pacer dog treadmill and both dobes use it but they don’t have that joyful look when they are running on it and the speed is limited. You can only go so fast which bores the crap out of Bogie and it is forced not freestyle.

WOW!!!

I have a feeling your family motto is often
"Never a dull moment!":):thumbsup2:

I went to high school south of KC, KS...still roll there there now and then...if we pass thru there again....do you allow "lookie loos" on your training days?
