Picking up my new puppy and need advice on his ears

Hi! I’m new here. So my puppy is going to be 12 weeks old on Sunday. I’m picking him up tomorrow. His ears have already been cropped. It doesn’t look like they did a good job, does it? I prefer a medium length crop, but this puppy is coming already cropped. I only have one vet near me (though in a town a hour away) who does cropping and posting, and they said they can just post the ears since he’s been cropped. Wondering what you all think of his ears as of right now. Should I still post them? If so, how? I’m a new dobie owner though my boyfriend has one already, so any thoughts or advice is much appreciated. I’ve been reading about pockets, but I’m still not sure I understand what that even means. Does my boy have pockets? He’s a European dobie. TIA!

Welcome from Minnesota and congrats on your new pup!

Yes you definitely need to post his ears to straighten them out.

Here's a good step by step tutorial.

Good looking pup. Looks like the ears are healed so you should be able to start posting. He might have pockets judging from how thr ears are tipping in. Lots of info on here about posting. Good luck. The backer rod method works well(with or without bumpers depending on pockets forming or not)

Thank you!! I’m also wondering about his color. I wanted fawn but the more I look at the pics, he looks blue and tan to me. He’s AKC registered so I’m kind of confused.

Thank you so much! I’m so glad I found this forum!

Don't worry, dilutes can seemingly 'change' color. Lighting can make all the difference. 😉 IMHO, it's much more important you know what you are getting into with a dilute. Read up on the tips and tricks on this forum. The most important is sunscreen. Find a good, safe one and use it. A dilute has less hair per square inch so they are at risk of sun damage, even skin cancer so protection is a must!

I have a miniature dachshund who is blue, tan, and cream so I know exactly what you mean! I recently lost my all white and blue miniature Doxie over the rainbow bridge. Her blue ended up having bad alopecia despite diet change and ointments, etc. (RIP Padme) But my boy is doing well, thankfully. 💙

Welcome to DCF from SE Alabama!
It does appear he has developed some pockets. I would suggest posting using backer rod (or tampons) with a bumper.

We had a fawn puppy (Willow). When she joined the family, she did look dark like a blue in her puppy pictures (1 & 2). But as she grew, she did lighten up. The nose is usually a good indicator. A fawn's nose is usually a dark liver, where a blue's nose is more of a steel blue. Willow's nose had us confused also.

Thank you! All very good points!

So did you get him home? We need lots of photos!
No. I didn’t make the trip out there after all. I called a local vet and spoke with them about his ears and their opinion on coat color. Then I got to thinking about how I’ve waited years for a fawn and didn’t want to drive miles to find out he was blue. So I told the breeder I needed to back out then cried about it. I was grateful that my deposit was 100% refundable, but I still haven’t received my money back. I have since found a new puppy with uncropped ears whose breeder communicates much more effectively and is clearly a fawn. Now, I wait for this new younger boy to be cleared by a vet to travel to me and pray I get my first deposit back.

Where is the new one traveling from and when do you expect to get him/her? Are you planning to have the ears cropped?

The new one is coming from Louisiana. I’m in Texas. I’m hoping for the end of next week. Yes, I’ll probably crop the ears but not 100% sure.
