Penny's Seizures - **GRAPHIC**

A

apbtmom76

ok so earlier this afternoon I let the dogs out to go potty and I got a great pic of all 3 of them by the tree lookin at me for the "squirrel" and Penny sat down and had the first of two grand Mal seizures. I have never been able to get them on video as they usually happen when I am asleep. SO I thought I would share in my and hers experience that we go through everytime. Please excuse the audio she gave me quite a scare today. between the two seizures, into the beginning of the second one she quit breathing for about 5 seconds. So I apologize for the shakiness of my voice. They seem to be getting more violent too.

Please do not let your kids watch this. And NO the boys do not mess with her they just want to make sure she is ok.

so sorry, she has them , i myself have these grand mal seizures, it is not a pretty site for anyone to see. if you are around her, when she is having them, put something in her mouth, like a stick. so she will not bite her tongue off. i cannot have cola, pepsi or carmel, it will set my off. sometimes stressed can set it off. i will say a pray for her.. cherelyn

Purple - No we do not know what triggers them or why she ahs them.

Whitedobees - I usually do put something in her mouth but I was scrambling to keep the boys away, they always want to be near her and make sure she is ok. I had my hands full. Thank you for the advice and I am sorry that you have this terrible affliction also. Penny says thank you for the warm wishes.

you make sure , you donot get your fingers in her mouth. gary my husband, i almost bit his finger off the first i had them in 1982.

It's funny you say that, the b/f was trying to get a towel in her mouth the last go round and she almost took the tip of his finger off. He said it felt like his finger had been in a vice grip.

Maddox - Thank you. Yes we have seen the vet a couple of times but I am going to be looking for aspecialist in this.

DO you know if there is a history of siezures in her family?
There are meds to help control them.

Has she ever had an injury to her head?

What brand of dog food do you feed?

SOrry so many questions, but I have heard of so many dogs of many different breeds having seizures that it makes me wonder what the common denominator is.

DO you have any other history of odd symptoms with her?

DLS - to answer your questions, lol, I own her sire and there is no history of seizures on her dam's side either.

No she has never had a head injury. We have had her literally since birth. SO no, no major head trauma.

I feed her Diamond Low - Fat right now. But tomorrow I am going to get the grain free Canidae formula to see if it will help with things.

They are not sure what the common denominator is, but I hope we find out soon.

No the only thing that has happened to her in her short life is when she was a pup she got demodecitc mange, we cured her of that and then she got Parvo and we brought her through that. But other than that nothing.

Purple -Penny says thank you and she sends lots of kisses. :D

The grain free food is a great idea. Read up on celiac disease in children and epilepsy.

Give Penny a hug from me.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with that. It must be totally stressful, and I'm still drying my cheeks off after watching the clips and thinking how hard it must be for you too.

Cherelyn, I'm sorry to hear that you suffer with it too. Sigh....

DLS - thank you for the tip. I will definately do that. penny says thank you for the love. She LOVES the LOVE!!

Jan - yes it is a bit stressful. Like I said I just feel so helpless to not be able to help her. I just hope we can get it under control.

That was so hard to watch .... my wife could not watch it anymore. I hope Penny gets better. I wish people and dogs did not have to go through that.

OMG I'm so sorry you guys have to go through that. I started crying I felt so bad for her I can't imagine having to go through this. From ours to penny lots of hugs and bully kisses (I guess I should add lab kisses too :) ) Hugs APBT I hope you can get some of this undercontrol soon.

Penny is so lucky to have you. My cousin had an episode similer to that when we were kids. its somthing you never forget. I hope you can find answers for her. she looks like such a sweetheart.

Last February my GSP Chipper had been out to go potty early in the morning (I originally thought this might have factored in, we were sub zero temps and a blizzard) - it was one of those blistering cold days like we are having now - everything was fine. An hour later (we had gone back to bed to warm up) I got up and said come on boys - Chipper jumped out of bed like always and hit the floor. I thought he was caught in the blankets and was thrashing around - nope, Grand Mal seizure. Because of the blizzard we didn't take him to the vet - but it was scary - lost his anal glands - and lasted a long time - an easy 20 minutes. What we did however, I will cuddle him, pet him - for some reason that seemed to really help.
There wasn't another seizure until June - and he came and got me. He was in the living room and came and shoved his head under my hand - I was able to ease him to the floor and again, hold him. This time it wasn't quite as bad but still a Grand Mal seizure.

Then a month later another one - and the last one was in August. It was in the middle of the night and again, he woke me up and I cuddled him - this was a more mild one. I think because he wasn't as scared.
In between he was taken to the vet and hundreds of dollars worth of blood tests - x-rays - anything we could think of was done to find a diagnosis. The only thing his blood work showed was "high cholestrol" which is different in dogs than people. His last seizure was in August... my fingers are still crossed.
My heart does go out to you - I cry each and everytime I see Chipper seizing. You just feel so helpless. By the way it was after I switched to Canidae that the seizures stopped.

diekrazy - I am sorry yur wife got upset by them. I too wish this affliction did not hurt people. Is so hard to deal with and watch. But she will get better.

kiaraNsimba - Penny says THANK YOU for the love and kisses. She LOVES the LOVE. :) That ok Orion is 1/4 Lab so Lab kisses are awesome too. Thank you for the hugs for myself. I too hope we get it under control soon. SHe is such a trooper and I just know she will get better.

Von - I actually think I am blessed to have her. SHe has taught me so much in her very short 3 years here on earth. SHe is one of the best dogs I have ever owned. Even thought technically she is the b/f's dog. She gravitates towards him, lol. She is a sweetheart with a herat the size of Texas. :D

jstlvsdobes - I am sorry to hear about your GSD, but I am happy to hear that he hasn't had one since August. That is fabulous news. Penny can't come get me because hers come on so suddenly. There is no warning or trigger(s). SHe is usually asleep when they happen. Thank you for the info on the Canidae. Did you switch to the grain free? HUgs to your GSD from Penny & i.

I forgot to tell you, my sheltie rascal ii, 4 years old, knows when i am going to have one, he starts walking around me in circles. And pushes me to sit down . I never trained him to do this, he just knows. My oldest sheltie, my beloved rascal i , he lived to be 13 years old. He went everywhere with me, he would keep me away from the water at the lake, when he sense something was going to happen too. I have been very lucky i have not have one in two years, since i have gotten dobermans to leave in the house with my sheltie, so we will see , if i ever have one, we will see if they sense them. We will see.
