Looking For My New Best Friend (East Coast, But Will Consider Anywhere)!

DobieRoscoe

Novitiate
I have been a Doberman mom most of my adult life, up until several years ago when our Doberman Roscoe suddenly became ill and ended up being diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. Sadly, our boy lost his battle.

He was (I might be biased here) one of the best, most kind, caring Dobermans I have ever met in my life and I miss him every day. It's been years, but to me, it still seems like it was yesterday.

I have anxiety and panic attacks and Roscoe would come with me everywhere. I am finally in a place in my life where my heart and home is ready to welcome another Doberman.

I have been on waiting lists with rescues and shelters but have not had a match come up. As a Former Vet Tech who worked with several rescues, I have a lot of connections in QUALITY pet transport - distance is not an issue to me for the right dog. I will get him (or her) home!

He (or she) would have an incredible home. I work from home so am here all of the time. I have 2 other dogs who are very sweet, laid back, submissive dogs. They are spoiled rotten. They have a multitude of dog beds, toys, puzzles, everything they could want they get!

We are pretty active. We enjoy going to the mountain and the lake and our dogs always come with us. They are part of our family. Roscoe was attached to me at the hip and I miss him more than words could possibly say.

I would prefer a Black/Rust but would consider a Red/Rust or another color if it was the right match! Male or female doesn't really matter. We have 2 neutered males who have been around many dogs (and Roscoe was also a male). That being said, any sort of severe dog aggression issues we might have to pass on!

I don't have an issue with other behavioral concerns - just could not do any sort of severe aggression to people or other dogs. We do have cats on our property, but they are outside.

We have 6 beautiful acres here with a fenced yard. Our babies live inside but can come and go as they please during the day. We feed a high quality food (with plenty of treats during the day) and we have, what I believe, is one of the best vets!

I would love a Dobie with a nice, longer show crop - but it's not a deal-breaker. I am interested in a slightly older puppy or adult dog (because although I LOVE show crops, posting Roscoe's ears was so anxiety-inducing)! LOL.

Last but not least, I am certainly not looking for a "free" dog. I know these dogs are expensive and I am willing to pay. I just miss having a Doberman in my life so desperately.

I sent your info to my breeder! A lot of time she has adult girls or boys that either don't turn out for show or they come back to her through no fault of their own (death of owner for example).

You may want to check out the FB group "Retired showdogs and wellbred purebreds" for something similar.

For the temperament you are wanting, I think the show line breeders such as the one @Rits is pointing you to would be what you are looking for. In my observation a lot of the European mixes can be surprisingly difficult. Since Dobermans as a breed are known to have some same-sex aggression, I would encourage you to ask for a female in your search for a new dog. Not every dog has this problem, but since you have 2 males already (neutering makes no difference to the aggressive male) there is no reason to take a chance. It's not something you will usually see until the new dog is 18 - 24 months old. Best of luck on finding your new best friend - it sounds like it's time.

I agree about a female being a better fit for your home. I also agree that the breeder @Rits mentioned above have some very even tempered Dobermans and might be able to find one to fit your needs.

Thank you! Who is the breeder? I could also be interested in a puppy if it was the right match. I also appreciate all of the advice about a female - that's definitely the direction I was leaning regardless. I appreciate all of the confirmations.

I just came across your post and I am so sorry to hear about your Roscoe. I recently lost my Siberian Husky service dog of 9 years on April 2nd. The grief is overwhelming, I understand.
I got a female Doberman puppy as a companion for my Husky and they were doing so well. Now that he is gone, she is the only dog.
I am going to rehome her to a Doberman friendly family, so she can have brothers or sisters and live life to the fullest. Remi is a six month old fawn and she has a medium crop. I don’t know if you found a pup yet but I wanted to let you see her. Remi weighs 55 lbs and is 25 in.

I wouldn't rehome her just because she's the only dog. They do just fine without other dogs and it gives you more time for one on one training.

So sorry to hear about your Husky... :(
Thank you.
I understand what you are saying about Remi doing fine on her own, but I am not doing fine.

Nico, my service dog, was with me for 9 years and I am lost without him. We depended on each other for life. I trained him to be my service dog since he was 8 weeks old and he took to it like that was what he was born to do.

Remi on the other hand is, don’t get me wrong, very intelligent and a fast learner, but not service dog material. She is more along the lines of pet and companion. Remi is funny and expressive, she has a human personality.

I need to recover from the loss of Nico and I do not want to unintentionally neglect Remi and her regular training in the process.

I understand you're mourning the loss of Nico and navigating life without him but please return Remi to her breeder, if possible, instead of finding someone unknown on the Internet to rehome her to.
