How often should I give my puppy water?

    Hi friends,
I have a 13 week old puppy that has yet to be housetrained. But before you say it should be out 24/7, to housetrain you have to take your puppy out 15-30 minutes after it drinks every time, and we can't follow the puppy around and do this every time it stops for a sip. So how often should we put out water?

I always provide 24/7 fresh water to my dogs/pups...
What makes you think the pup will pee only after drinking water?

The only time I've held back on water is during the night. Otherwise, they have access to water all the time.

I am sorry, but pups don't have full control over their bladder, nor do they get much warning that they have to pee until they are a bit older, in my experience it is usually 4-5 months before they have more solid control. My one girl was horrible about holding it and making pee mistakes at 6 months - so I put her on a leash 24/7 she was never more than 6 feet from me - it only took about 10 days and she was no longer making pee mistakes in the house.

It is essential that you pup stays hydrated and allowed free access to water or you will cause other problems - I do however remove access to water about 2 hours before they are put in their crate. Also crating will help to teach them to hold it as much as possible, so I hope you are using a crate - its a big help in house training

Water is a critical element in raising a healthy puppy- to help with potty training I give free rein to water during the day up til 7 PM at night -

Then take the puppy out at 10:30 PM for final potty and to bed. Please read above on TrinityDobes and leash the puppy to help with training.

It is a pain til done but well worth the effort to do it right.

I agree, I've always provided water for them 24 hours a day, and it's usually only a matter of time before you figure out the pups potty schedule, so I've never found it necessary to pull the water from them.

Your pup is adorable, BTW. :)

Make sure that the puppy has fresh water, change it everyday and be sure to watch for your puppy needs to go potty. You'll get the hang of it, sometimes they'll give you mannerisms that tell you that they need to go potty now.

With the crate training he is up at 7:00 AM, (no need to set the alarm) and outside we go. He has water all day until about 8:00 PM. And back out at around 10:00 PM. The first two months, he would go out and pee. Then I would bring him back inside and within 15 minutes of having fun, without warning, he would pee again. At almost four months now, he has learned well and things are pretty well under control. He sleeps through the night now, but a couple of months ago, it was outside at 2:00 or 3:00 AM for a pee break! Hang in there!!

Yeah, I gave my girl water access all day until about 7:30 pm. Then come morning after a couple times out for potty breaks thru the night, I would put the dish out and let her have at it.
