12 years ago we adopted a bundled up chocolate package of crazy named "Mona". She was estimated to be about 2 years old. My husband and I fondly remember her playing the sweet game at the shelter by standing on her hind legs, leaning into the kennel panel just begging for attention from us. "Look how sweet and calm I am..." It only took a day with her to realize her shelter name wasn't fitting of her and thus we had Java, our little cup of caffeine.

Java, you've taught us so much with your athleticism, insane drive, and naughtiness! She once attempted to make her own racing records on the Bonneville Salt Flats back in the day. She slipped her collar and had the best time of her life. Java taught both of us patience and how to be consistent. She required it and would certainly take advantage if we didn't follow through with a command, little stinker. You were so smart Java. You managed to be a dork at times too, don't forget that.

Java took us through flyball and finished class weeks ahead of everyone else in her class. We had a little break due to finances but we still enjoyed one another with offleash hikes in the woods. Java was a trucker dog, traveling across the country with her Dad and I. Around the time Java was 6 we went on to dock diving and while you may have not jumped far, you always were eager to go again and slowly but surely jumped farther each time, making us so proud when you finally popped up and out off that dock, leaping for that toy. You ran your heart out in lure coursing and always made others smile seeing a fit lab having a blast. Everyone always thought you were a puppy just because of your smaller size and drive. You fooled everyone right up until the end. Just less than 2 years ago you were even doing barn hunt where you gained a number of fans with your enthusiasm and drive for such an old girl.

An hour before you went to sleep forever, you were yourself. Ready for dinner, I mean what lab isn't ready for food? Gma commented that a few minutes prior you were out laying in the sun enjoying the beautiful evening. You gave us a scare just 4 days ago Java. At the age of 3 you fought cancer, Stage 3 Mast cell... then rebounding from the scare a few days ago right back to your normal self. You seriously fought right up until the very end. I'm so happy to have been blessed to have such a great dog like you in my life, Java. Thank you for the journey and fly high in the sky.

Oh my goodness.... I can’t express how sorry I am.

You clearly gave her a very fulfilling life. I hope your family can find some comfort knowing that. Definitely one of the worst heartbreaks life puts on us.

    Ok typing with tears flowing.
What a blessed and beautiful life she lived. So full of happiness, love, drive, enthusiasm right up to the end.

My heart is aching for you even though I know Java is running like the wind and reconnecting with friends over the bridge. I can just see her jumping sky high for the frisbee and know she wants you to be happy for her like she was happy to fill your life with adventure, she challenged you to go the next mile.

Java blessed all of us with her bigger than life personality and her total love of you and the life you gave her!

Run and fly free Java, you carry our hearts with you. :sorrow::love:

Sharon had asked me in private what happened, now that time has passed, I feel I am able to share with the DCF family what I shared with the staff.

"Yes, she died unexpectedly. We last were with her an hour before we found her. She was outside earlier that day with us playing, eating, drinking... acting all fine. She gave us zero signs besides the scare 4 days ago. My mom told me when she came in from doing yard work she saw Java in the outside portion of the kennel laying down with her head up, enjoying the sun. Shes in the kennel that goes indoor/outdoor in our garage to be able to drink freely and empty her bladder freely, every 30 min the vet wanted, so that's why we felt that would be best for her. Past few days we have been bringing her inside for a little to hang out and play.

Anyways.. Just an hour later after we last were with her and only 15 min or so after my mom last saw her, Derek and I stepped outside around 7:45 to shut the chickens in. She was already gone... She was laying peacefully on her side, in the spot she would be laying to be in the sun. Her mouth was slightly open, her eyes open. Her gums were white and tongue out. I still performed CPR just to be sure she wasn't still hanging in there. She couldn't have died no more than 15 minutes ago... She was still warm. That was it for her. With how unexpected it was and she was fine not that long ago, Id like to think that she went quickly.

We are upset that she was doing so well then to just go like this but she's had a really really great and long life. Couldn't have asked for a better send off. We are both almost thankful that we weren't there...we would have felt helpless. I had just loved on her before going inside the house. She only knew love and happiness. She was my husband's dog, so he is hurting the most. We are so thankful for the memories to look back on. We have both cried an endless number of times looking back on her pictures and reading everyone's comments here and on FB. My husband is going in late to work this morning as we are taking her to get cremated. We plan to take her with us to our property when it's done, as she never got a chance to see and run on it."

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and kindness. I am glad that her pictures and my words truly captured the great girl that she was and captured who she was. My husband, Derek, has been reading your comments too and they bring him great comfort. She truly was his dog and he was the one that with my encouragement showed off their talent as a team. Thank you guys again for not only helping me but he too for our great loss. Having Java memorialized here gives him and I a place to cry and smile all at the same time.

This had me in tears pretty quick.
I’ve pretty much lived that. CPR and all.
She was there and a few minutes later she wasn’t.
    You have my deepest empathy.
I’ve also cried an endless amount of times. Because on occasion I still do.
It remains endless until our own ends.

We let Paige sniff her shortly after we found her. She wasn't entirely sure about it. The cremation service wasn't available until this afternoon so she remained blanketed in the garage with the heat off. It was 40 degrees so she remained preserved. I let Paige sniff her again, this time she thoroughly sniffed her rear, over her body then ran to her face and tried to sniff her face. I uncovered Javas face so she could and she sniffed her eyes then down to her muzzle, and went back to sniff her more thoroughly again. She then sat and looked up at me and I gave her reassuring pets. As weird as it was, Paige seemed unsure what to do, she was almost excited? Ready to do zoomies . I left her alone for a moment to go to the fridge in the garage and Paige went back to sniff Java really good one last time then walked away. I told my husband, I'm sure we would love for our pets to have human emotions like us but I think they all take it in differently like we do. Paige at least understands that Java is no longer alive and that we are sad. I don't think Java had that smell on her yesterday, hence Paige's confusion and lack of interest. I made sure to do things separately with the girls all their life so they are used to being separated. Paige has been through two deaths, her BFF Jesse (my parents prior Golden and my childhood dog) and now Java.

I've been through a number of animal deaths in just a year. Too many. I bought 9 chickens from a breeder that breeds to standard in February of last year. 7 of them died, slowly one after another from 6-8 months to an airborne virus, completely out of my control. I cried for every one of them. My rooster Drumstick we put to sleep last January. Derek's mother passed two weeks ago to pancreatic cancer, we just returned from her service in Ohio a week ago. She was diagnosed in Nov. And now Java. It never, ever, EVER gets easier.

We got back from taking Java to the pet cremation service this afternoon. We pet her super soft plush fur and my husband stroked her velvet ears one last time. We both broke down in the car. Death never gets easier no matter how much you go through it. The memories of being so blessed to be granted the experience of having such beautiful souls and a lifetime to build a beautiful partnership does eventually outweigh the inevitable sadness.

I was smiling looking at your pictures. A lab owner once told me there's labs, and then there's chocolate labs. I'm glad you have such wonderful memories of a long life and very quick passing. God bless.
