Drontal

Pepper was given 1 dose of Drontal yesterday at the ER for worms. Seven hours after she took the pill she had a few episodes of diarrhea and vomited twice in the night. She was antsy and whining a lot and would not go to sleep. I had to sleep with her on the sofa and she didn’t fall asleep until almsot 2 am. Is this normal for some dogs who take Drontal? She seems ok today, but she’s had hardly any sleep.
I am not even sure how she had worms as she is on Simparico Trio. Vet mentioned maybe she’s had them all along, but she’s had negative stool samples previously.
Pretty sure she got a dead bird 2 weeks ago that my cat left outside. Can that do it? Thanks all!

See if your dose was aligned with Peppers weight on the chart in that article.

Drontal® and Drontal® Plus Overdose Information in Dogs and Cats. Vomiting and diarrhea are the most common signs of an overdose. Additional symptoms of drooling, lethargy, muscle tremors, and seizures are possible

Tapeworms can come from eating or even catching/mouthing rodents that have fleas. Not sure if birds carry the tapes in any lifecycle of that parasite. My previous dog got tapeworms when I lived in Colorado at over 7,000 ft. There were no fleas. I asked the vet how it was possible and he told me about the rodents - turns out rodents have fleas at that altitude but that those fleas don't get on domestic dogs & cats.

Thank you @Ravenbird. Appreciate it.

I was reading stuff all night like a lunatic. She’s 62.6 and she took 1.5 pills. I believe that’s correct for her size?

Seems ok today no issues at all. Ate and walked today.

Yes, no fleas either and if anything all I can think is that she got a rodent or bird my cat left out.

Tapeworms are from fleas. Simparica doesn't cover tapeworms so that would be why. Interceptor Plus does and what I use.

Looking online it appears Peppers symptoms are some possible side effects of the drug! Does she have more to take? I would have them mark in her charts to not give her Drontal in the future as she seems to not react well to it.

She doesn’t have fleas and my cat is also on medication monthly. I’m not sure what happened besides her eating dirt and a rodent/bird - maybe.

Yes, agree never going to give her that again ever. She only had one dose, 1.5 pills and that was taken last night.

Thank you @Rits ☺️

I am going to talk to the vet Monday about switching her to Inceptor plus.

Spoke with ER vet teach she said they could run more diagnostics on her to make sure she didn’t ingest anything else. I told her no issues today and hasn’t had a bm
Which is normal for her after diarrhea.

I am going to call my vet tomorrow and see what they have to say. I would think Drontal made her sick as she did have worms in her stool.

What do you guys think?

Ultimately it’s up to you, but I feel like if she’s already improving it was likely just side effects.
I agree she had medicine and then hours later side effects. If she had ingested something I would think it would’ve happened prior the pill. Plus, I saw the worms.
Thank you! They sure cause some stress 😫

I’ve read a few forums today about pet parents using Drontal on their dogs. Same things happened to their dog!
Restlessness, hyperactivity, unable to sleep, barking, whining, diarrhea, and vomiting.
Pepper has been off the walls unlike herself. Today her naps have been awful and she’s whined non stop. She is finally settling down after her dinner. It’s been about 24 hours since her dose of medicine.

How scary is this? I thought I was losing my mind and nope it seems like it is an issue with dogs that use Drontal.

I'd give it another day to wear off. Sounds like side effects to me, if nothing goes south just take an easy evening. Remember, they read your emotions but she may have no idea that you are anxious about her not feeling well, just that you are anxious about something. So she gets anxious about something because you are, but she doesn't know what or why. Not saying this is the case, just be aware!

Today normal stool and she slept all night. You’re completely right about emotions and I needed that reminder ❤️ 🫣
