A growling Doberman dog in guard mode is perhaps not the best animal to put your hands near.

But one brave owner was happy to play with Peaches, a Doberman Pinscher, before it leapt out at the camera bringing the footage to a terrifying end.

'Peaches, guard,' a man orders as the video, filmed in America, begins.

Peaches becomes more terrifying as the hand moves closer towards him and he snarls threateningly.

Throughout his eyes remained trained on his owner.

The exercise continues in the same vein, with the brown doberman baring his teeth whenever the hand approaches him.

He jerks violently, perhaps unnerved by a sudden movement behind the camera, and looks alert - a true guard dog.

Get away! He growls, baring his huge sharp teeth and lowering his long ears before barking sharply

Terrifying: He jerks violently, perhaps unnerved by a sudden movement behind the camera, and looks alert - a true guard dog

Disturbing: He suddenly leaps forward with a loud bark, mouth wide open and teeth gleaming, causing the woman to scream

The frame then fades to a later shot of Peaches watching the hand carefully before he suddenly leaps forward with a loud bark, mouth wide open and teeth gleaming, causing the woman to scream.

The video ends there and it is not known what happened next.

The clip has been posted on YouTube but the owner has revealed the exercise was in fact just a game - 'a Dobie version of "cops and robbers"'.

She also owns a second Doberman and adds, 'My pups get plenty of hugs and kisses.'

YouTube users have been quick to comment.

'Damn. That is one killer dog,' one writes. 'Dobermans--your greatest friends and body guards but also your most feared enemies too. Look at those teeth! And that growl!'

Another jokes, 'Do you still have both hands?'

The Doberman Pinscher breed was developed in Germany around 1890 by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a tax collector, primarily as a guard dog.

They were originally bred to be ferocious and aggressive but modern breeders have calmed down these traits over the years.

If properly trained they can be wonderful family pets and good with children. They are quick to learn.

Of unknown ancestry they are believed to be a mixture of many dog breeds, including the Rottweiler, Black and Tan Terrier, and German Pinscher.

Ya I hate that video and that is not ok. Obviously not a game look at that dogs body language ! Someone is going to get hurt and the dogs going to be the one who is blamed. Sad ( some people really shouldn't own dogs.)

Did anyone else think that hand looked like a childs?

    I agree! :)

I also agree it shouldn't be posted on YouTube! Especially with an abrupt ending like that! If this were a 'game', then at least show that the dog was in complete control of his owner and his commands. Don't make it look like all hell broke loose and you have to cut the ending. :nono:

Also, there was no reaction by the dog when the owner said "Guard". Not even a flinch. And then the video was 'cut' to her growling. That makes me wonder what happened in between.

I, too, saw this a while back and thought that it was extremely poor PR for the breed. Of course, it didnt affect me in a bad way, but people who are looking for a reason to be a Dobie hater just found one.How sad. The same mentality that thugs use with their dogs...proud of how "mean" they can be. Nasty:complain:

Notice the "toy" between the Dobie's legs and how the hand approaches it. I don't think "guard" meant anything to the dog - it was just a game with the dog protecting his toy. I played the same game lots of times with Sadie. She would look really really dangerous and scary - especially if my hand was threatening a bully stick she was chewing on. I might have been more concerned except my other hand was holding the bully stick while she chewed it.

This is first I have seen of video. That is so incredibly irresponsible!! Just perpetuates what non dog people and others believe all Dobermans are. With any dog, not just Dobermans or other perceived "Dangerous Breeds" there is often a thin line between play and an escalation in excitement that can turn dangerous quickly. I would never antagonize my pet that way. If my dogs eyes became dilated and fixed with rigid stance while playing with a toy, then it's game over, time to drop the toy and move on to some calming activity. SMH

The users YouTube account has been deleted. Hmm? The timing seems interesting since it was apparently an older video. I never saw it. Which from the sounds of it is perfectly OK with me.
