Homeowners in rural areas are buying Dobermans and other big guard dogs to protect their properties as they live in fear of burglary gangs, a Fine Gael TD says.

The Irish Independent revealed yesterday how some homeowners have spent close to €10,000 on CCTV and electronic gates.

Now Fine Gael TD Ray Butler says he has noticed a growing number of householders turning to guard dogs.

The Meath West TD said crime is a "big issue" in his area.

"We had a couple of shops broken into there by gangs coming down from the city and coming down the motorway. We had a few ordinary household robberies as well."

"People have brought in a lot of extra security. The increase in big dogs around the countryside is immense - and I don't blame them," said Mr Butler, whose own home was burgled in 2004.

"The breeds would be [like] Dobermans, the bigger breeds of dogs. It's a cheaper form of security."

Doberman Pinschers were made famous by the 1980s TV show 'Magnum, PI', where two guard dogs continually menaced the eponymous hero, played by Tom Selleck.

Mr Butler says cameras targeting motorway junctions could help catch burglars.

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald has claimed burglaries have fallen since 2014, but has not yet provided up-to-date figures to support her theory.

I just hope they aren't buying them for the wrong reasons so they expect them to protect their home, but just find them a fixture they don't want to take care of.

That was a tough piece to read, must be some dialect barrier or something... what the heck is a FG TD anyways?

FG = Fine Gael (Right wing political party)
TD = Teachta Dála (US = Congressmen)
Basically equivalent of saying Republican Representative

Get Higgins' accent in your head. Now: "Oh. My. God!" Remember that? Who knew he could have saved so much time and effort by just saying the letters o, m and g. Archaic times they were.

But yes, that's what I feel like saying when I hear of the notion of buying Dobermans as guard dogs. Brings to mind the wrong sort of situations. Personal bodyguard sounds better.

I just love how that rolls off the tongue. Dobermans are the Epitome of awesome, of course everyone's going to want one or two.
