Crate pads or bedding or bare crate?

Pepper has a new bad habit and she’s making me crazy.

She sleeps in her downstairs crate during the day which used to have a blanket and a bed.
I removed the blanket as I saw she had been eating it. Today she went to nap and maybe she was up for 30 minutes in her crate, because I was busy. She opened up her crate bed and I’m not sure if she ate the foam or not, I am going to give her some bread.

I guess she now has to nap without anything in her crate besides a safe chew, which has been in there since day one.

She will stay in her crate to nap no issue, but when she gets up she lets us know. I wait it out until she’s done fussing and then get her. My thing is though she needs to be able to be crated so we can run errands or whatever we need to do. She’s not usually an issue, but she clearly has been eating her linens and she doesn’t do that in her night time crate.

Am I wrong for keeping the crate bare?

It makes us humans feel good to give them nice comfy things, but I think bare crate is the right thing to do. It doesn't feel great to us as pet parents, but it's waaaay better than an obstruction surgery.

Leaving the soft things for the night, where she's not gnawing them up is something you can still feel great about.

Thank you! That’s what I have to do she’s just not to be trusted sadly.

She’s had bread and pumpkin hoping she is ok.

It’s not wrong to leave the crate bare! If anything, it’s the right and safe thing to do so she doesn’t end up with a blockage.

Remy also cannot have any bedding in his crate. I use a Primo Pad so there is a little cushion, but it isn’t necessarily soft. It fits perfectly into the crate and he hasn’t attempted to chew it. He does scratch/dig at it a little sometimes before laying down. Think of how a dog will bunch up a blanket, I think this is his version of that minus the blanket lol. It took months but eventually it made a small hole. I had the first one for nearly a year and just bought a new one a few months ago. If you’re interested in trying one out, they’ll replace it for the cost of shipping if it gets damaged within 30 days.

Very good to know thank you!

She was doing great with her stuff and now this is her new thing in her crate. Never a dull moment.

Everytime I see someone talking about their dog eating stuff I count my lucky stars. It has to be a scary thing and then looking at them in their bare crate... No answers here, just feeling your pain.

Less stress would be great lol.
She just started this nonsense in her daytime crate.
Fingers crossed nighttime she won’t start it. Nighttime she goes right to her bedroom
crate and passes out asap.

I've always used big bath towels or beach towels for our pups in the crate since they haven't been fun for them to chew on - until Olive. LOL

A few weeks ago she vomited up a huge wad of chewed up towel and before I got something to clean it up, she ate it again... :confused-alt: Needless to say those towels went right in the trash.
I've had a K9 Ballistics crate pad in one of the crates for many years and none of them have bothered it so I ordered another one and it just came today.

She sounds like Pepper, eating random crap always! It’s stressful. I looked out the back door today checking on her and she was munching on a pine tree. Like why?!

I saw those beds and I was wondering if they hold up. You do like them?

I bought her an expensive bed in the beginning like a moron, and well she chewed the zipper right off it. Thankfully, she didn’t consume any parts of the zipper.

So I got a bed with the zipper hidden and finally let her have it in her crate. Nope she ripped that bed right open.

I may have to give it time lol before she’s blessed with a nice bed.

LOL that is so Olive. If it fits in her mouth, she's going to try to eat it. :confused-alt:

The one we've had is probably 15 years old and it looks like it did on day one. Our first Doberman's would chew any beds but they couldn't get a tooth into this one.
Here is the new one we just got today and Elroy decided to try it out the minute I put it in Olive's crate.

Aww look at him 😍

Very cool it lasted that long! It’s only 99.00, that’s doable. Thank you! I will definitely purchase one for her.
The other bed I got was USA made 135.00 so dumb really. I didn’t tell my husband what I spent lol and then I had to toss it out. 😭😩

I had a thing pop for something like 20% off if you sign up for emails. If you have a metal crate, it comes with corner anchors too so they can't move it to try to chew it.

Oh wow that’s not bad! I will do that tonight, thanks so much @JanS.
What a great idea with the anchors so they can’t lift it up.

Thanks Jan! I just ordered one! So far I have not left her alone in her crate for very long. At least not awake LOL so we'll see how this does!
