Well, as always, the Ellis family are busy, busy, busy......this time with a forthcoming adoption (hopefully/fingers crossed!)

You may well be aware, but my daughter and her boyfriend have filled out an adoption form with our local Dobermann rescue. It has been brought to her attention, through the rescue, that there’s a possible adoption on the cards. He’s currently in Hungary and they’re looking at transporting him to the UK in February. He’s a popular young boy and the rescue have received loooooads of adoption forms but Jemma & Alex have been placed at the top of the list. She’s also been in contact with the Hungarian rescue. She’s currently receiving daily pics and videos of him (just seen the cutest little video of him playing ball)

Here’s his story, it’s a little long but gives us a good insight...(I could also nitpick a bit concerning the weight/ears/neutering....but I won’t! Lol)

‘DEACON - DOBERMAN PUP - MALE - 4 MNTHS - NOT NEUTERED, HES TOO YOUNG FOR THAT, SO IT WOULD BE PART OF THE ADOPTION CONTRACT THAT AN ADOPTER HAD TO GET HIM NEUTERED BEFORE THE AGE OF 1 YEAR.
This gorgeous ex breeder Doberman puppy is Deacon. The poor little man has been handed to us by a breeder because hes got one testicle still up inside his tummy, so he is unfit for breeder purpose. This poor boy was going to be cast out to the streets as not being good enough for showing, and so of course, we took him in. Yes were very anti breeder but this is a genuine case of him being abandoned if we didnt take him from the breeder. His need is just as great as any other abandoned dogs need, and we take in those who are not wanted for any reason through no fault of their own. This poor little guy has already been put through surgery to have his ears and tail docked, something we are vehemently against, but the fact remains he still needs a kind loving gentle home and we want him to be a family pet in a loved kind family or couple. His situation is very sad and his abandonment is through no fault of his own. He is four months old, and good with other dogs. He has grown around his siblings (who are not in our care, they have already been sold on by the breeder :'( ) so he is very well socialised with other dogs, And hes been around children is a loving and playful with them. He is still growing of course, but he will be around 27 kilos when fully grown. Hes a lovely temperament, and loves all people despite what hes been through already. We are getting more photos of Deacon now hes in our care, and they will be coming soon. Dobermans are very giddy happy active dogs, and need lots of exercise and sociaisation, so we are hoping he can be adopted in an active family who can give him all the exercise he needs. He is fully vaccinated up to date for all diseases, and he is chipped with his own passport. He doesnt have a sponsor either, so if you wanted to be Deacons sponsor, it costs just £37 to keep him safe and warm in our kennels until somebody wants to adopt this sweetie. He is too young to be neutered, we would normally do that at around 9 months, but if his second testicle doesnt drop, then you do need to know in the Uk a neutering surgery for him would cost a little more than normal because one of the testicles hasnt dropped its still up inside his body. But over the coming months theres every chance this could drop. But theres no guarantee. Honesty first and foremost at all times about our rescues. <3 <3 <3’

I will of course keep you all updated on this (very) possible adoption. They fit the criteria and are both extremely active. Jems has the experience of Dobermanns and plans to Canicross, too. So, please keep your fingers and toes crossed for them. We also don’t need a ‘home visit’ as we’ve already passed that with Tara.

If anyone on the forum has experience of ‘retained testicles’ I would very much appreciate your input :)

it’s called cryptorchid when a testicle is retained in the abdominal wall. Usually testicles drop by 2mo but we will usually wait for them to drop until 6 mo of age. I have seen in my years as a tech it is usually the right testicle that fails to drop.
Doc usually does and Ultrasound to locate testicle and will do a laparoscopic surgery to bring it down to the scrotum so they don’t have to be neutered at such a young age. If left without care it could easily become strangled in the abdomen where blood supply is cut off and it would become necrotic and could easily cause an infection or septic situation.

Doc follows the later spay and neuter of at least a year and half so the growing has necessary hormones to complete it’s purpose.

They do charge more for a cryptorchid neuter because it’s more invasive trying to locate and remove the testicle. I like that Doc offers laparoscopy to save the testicle until a neuter is necessary. It’s less invasive, healing time fast and very small incision.

He is beautiful and I truly hope Jemma gets him!! Fingers, toes, eyes crossed and will cross the street many times to send good adoption vibes!!!!

I can’t help it but I am giddy with excitement over this.

I look at him and see a Brett, not a Deacon. I am a “Gone With The Wind” enthusiast as I have watched that movie sooo many times as a kid and teen and adult. I am sure not many today appreciate it but I did and loved the plantation named Tara. It was beautiful country and of course Brett comes to mind since he was the love of Scarlett’s life after her love of home which was Tara.

Sorry rambling here but just so excited I want to throw a party for the puppy.:gun::wow:

What a cutie! Since they are against cropping, do you think he is being posted?

Oh man why is he so cute! Can’t believe the “breeder” would just throw him on the streets. Good luck!

No, he’s not! :( and when you think about it he’s not going to reach the UK till he’s 6 months old. I think we will have missed the opportunity completely. He’ll be cropped but flopped.
Jemma’s absolutely fine with that, she knows the deal. All of Tara’s daughters are the same so she’s seen *roughly* what they will end up looking like.

I would still try the posting depending on his ear leather. You may get lucky and have perfect standing ears by a yr old.

I wish you could fly to Hungary and bring that baby back with you.

He’s a good looking pup! He seems calm and gentle in the video too.

I would assume a breeder that has spent the time and money to crop and dock wouldn’t give up a good pup over 1 testicle, that seems so unnecessary, but then I wonder if the breeder knows the testicle is unlikely to descend on its own and maybe the cost of the surgery is more expensive than what they paid for the C/D? Just speculating. I also wish they would post his ears! I know they are against cropping but that part has already been done so it seems a waste to not post him. Oh well. I agree that you should try posting him when you get him, you never know! This is certainly an exciting development for your whole family!

Flights in Europe are way cheaper than they are in North America too, less than 3 hours away  :spit:

I think Roatan is the most expensive place to fly to from the Keys. Key West to Roatán on economy cost us $1252. for a 2 hr flight RT per person. It is insane!!!

The whole adoption process takes 8 weeks apparently. I’ve found out tonight that West Country Dobermann rescue found him through another rescue within the UK (not breed specific) and are working with the rescue to secure his place with Jemma & Alex. The lady from the local Dobie rescue is popping over tomorrow to update the home visit seeing as they are living in the annexe and well, she just wants to love all over Tara. Lol
The rescue that will bring Deacon are...

I’ll update more when news comes in but I know that they’re almost at the reservation stage.

We’ve told the rescue that we will cover all costs concerning travel, pet passport etc....
Also, we told them we had some concerns of neutering him so young and they’ve agreed that we can neuter him at 18 months old but we will be followed up to make sure the procedure was done.

Awesome on negotiating the neuter! :thumbsup2: I was glad to see they were waiting at least a year in their original statement. Maybe it’s a North American thing, but I thought rescue orgs would S/N before even releasing the animal to its new home regardless of age, so even 1 year seemed generous. But 18 months is super!

What a handsome boy and I'm so excited for you guys since they're at the top of the list!

I agree with Bri that it's definitely worth trying to post since it can work with some pups at that age.

I can't wait to see updates on the progress!

Wow, great news and a happy looking little man. I could live with those ears flopped if it came to that. They are even at least and that little flip on the ends is cute. I was wondering why they thought he would be only 27kg though. I would have expected him to be over 30kg even if he is small. So happy for you all and it sounds like it is nearly a certainty now. :woot2:
