Am I missing something with ear cropping?

So I tried the posting method that doesn't use tape since the stitches are still in but uses the adhesive with the tape. It lasted maybe 15 seconds after I let him go until they were flopping around, and the bottom was outside of his ear. This whole process is just not the best experience so far. I hope things get easier after the stitches come out. I can deal with the nipping, chewing stuff, being wild and crazy, i think all that is part of the process and I truly enjoy it. This whole ear thing though, I dont know if id be able to deal with this again.

Please, don't do this until the stitches are out and he is completely healed. You can't pull the ears up properly to get the posts far down, you can't tape properly. Once more: Nothing should be done until the stitches are all out and all the edges are healed and no scabs. This is not a sprint, there is no rush.
