Doodles of all shapes & sizes seem to be dogs of choice in many parts of England too. I always chuckle when I think that they are really just (expensive) designer mongrels. My next dog will be a Doberpoo (not)
As a U.K. resident who’s owned ”dangerous” Dobermans for 40 years my take is that this talk is a knee jerk reaction by a struggling government that needs a headline grabber which will make it look like it’s able to take decisive action.
The truth is that the current legislation (dangerous dogs...
If there’s nothing really obvious you have to invent little jobs as part of play training…& take it as far as
you want.
I taught mine to look for & locate a bunch of house keys that I “loose” around the garden. She knows that
they’re an important item & loves finding them for me.
There are currently no limitations re the import of cropped & docked Dobes to the U.K. but they are very
expensive with no guarantees re liniage. (Lots of $’s to be made with dubious ID’s) Its also led to a number of messed up jobs (ie one ear up & one down) due to lack of expertise in posting...
Our Dobie pups have always been confined to one room only initially even when we’ve been at home & caged or penned within that room when we’re out. Each one has been different but they’ve only been given the freedom (initially supervised) of additional rooms once they have learned not to be...
I had to “go it alone” due to the pandemic. With a lot of patience (one nail a day to begin with)plus high value rewards & masses of praise, I quite quickly got to the position where I could clip the nails on one foot, then two & then all four paws with no problem. Now I think she enjoys it &...
From what you’ve described I don’t think your young pup is aggressive but has reacted, once to an accidental scare & second to attempted enforcement by (in her eyes) another pup. They are great copiers & by jumping on the lazyboy she was only doing what she‘d seen humans do.
Something to bear in...
If your pup is already on a raw diet just go for it with the home made. There may be a meat source that your individual
wont get on with (chicken doesn’t sit well with mine).
100% with Ravenbird on the “look at me” (or just “look”) and “leave it” command work young Dobes & also the advice not to over do the physical exercise.
Teaching them how to focus in this way is essential and the concentration involved is not only calming but very tiring for them.
I found it...
Mine have gone for loose / flowy clothing, both pants & jacket sleeves (& shoe laces) at that age. The simple solution was to avoid wearing these puppy magnets.
So much good advice above. Given how challenging the breed can be top marks to you Lii for adopting a Dobe with issues & putting in the time to try & turn his life around.🙂
No problem Genta & best wishes to you. I was in the same position as you 4 years ago (really apprehensive) as it was the first dog that I’d fed on a raw diet. Glad to hear it’s progressing well for you Though. Raw tripe (both cow & sheep) is the cheapest of all raw animal products here in the...
Sounds like you’re doing a good job Josette…you’ve just got to calmly stick with it.
My Luna (also a brown Euro) drove us to the edge of beyond & back with her reactive craziness & finally became
almost civilised at 3 years. Now at 4.5 years is practically an angel
Ive got nothing against the correct use of e or prong collars myself but the legal situation in the U.K. is confusing. From what I can see the use of E collars was banned in Wales in 2010 but is currently still legal in England, Scotland & N Ireland awaiting a final decision on draft legislation...
I’m so sorry.
By the sound of it for your situation you did the right thing.
I’m onto Dobie number 6 in 40 years & though they are all individuals & have varied by small degree you’ve pretty much described the breed charateristics.
I’ve had to have 4 of the six PTS (one is still with me) &...
This was nearly 7 year old Lola on a beach walk as normal, coughing was occasional & DCM undiagnosed. 24 hours later she was stretchered to veterinary hospital, too weak to walk. Her decline was shockingly rapid. The vets kept her alive for 2 days & no doubt would have done so for longer had I...
Heartbroken for you sahilm. I lost my last Dobe just before her 7th birthday. An initial cough disappeared & a trip to
what turned out to be a clueless vet didn’t alert us to anything major. Six weeks later the intermittent cough returned but Lola was still active & apparently normal in every...
