Just revisiting but that breed is not meant to be cropped since they have a totally different job than a Doberman or other guardian dog for a human or house. Pyrenees, Anatolians, Maramere's and others are livestock guardians just don't have the c/d look in the standard.
Thankfully our club is going to be doing all of them starting next year and most likely together at one or more shows. The Bemidji fall show is really good about that too.
And it especially bad in the Doberman circle. Heaven forbid a new breeder with worthy, health tested dogs tries to breed them or the nasty rumors are going to start circulating. Every single one of them had to start somewhere and you need some pretty thick skin if you do want to breed.
I was just talking to someone from the club who lost her Doberman in the last couple years. Someone with a "Golden Doodle" asked her if they could use her boy for a stud. She said "go right ahead but he's neutered". LOL
That's mostly why we had Olive spayed, even though the breeder wouldn't have minded having another litter with her. We did crate and rotate these two when she was in heat but that didn't make him any less psychotic. LOL
From what I understand it doesn't usually happen until about 2 years after the spay, give or take.
That's an OSS (ovary sparing spay) and there are mixed results with it. I think @GennyB had it done with Rumor and @Rits parents had it done on their Golden.
Olive had the traditional laser spay...
I looked it up and here is the brief descripton.
What is WCERA?
It's escape rooms with your dog that focus on both the dog and handler having to complete tasks. For example, the dog may need to correctly identify a scented article (birch), then the handler must solve a puzzle in order to...
I guess another thing that should be mentioned is that even if you leave them natural, they sometimes have to be taped down so they lie flat since they naturally want to come up in this breed.
That looks like a ton of fun! We did the spoon race at horse playdays, except we had a raw egg on the spoon. I did learn that if you splat a raw egg on the saddle, it really polished it up. LOL
The bandaging really doesn't happen much anymore since it's better to leave the edges exposed as they heal. Posting is a totally different thing you do after the edges are completely healed to get the ears standing in the correct stance. It seems intimidating the first couple times you do it but...
It doesn't tell you everything you need to know but it's definitely a good start. As you start your search for a pup feel free to ask all of the questions you might have and if you find a breeder you like, run them past us and we can help you out.
One of our members in IN has an occasional...
Welcome from Minnesota!
Cropping and docking is the breed standard and it is in no way cruel like some of the animal activists are trying to state. The docked tail is in part so a predator can't grab them by the tail to try to take them down, not to mention I have heard of lots of cases where...
That is totally Olive and I don't think I've heard such a deep growl out of her until we've stayed in a hotel room and she was in clear protective mode in "our space". I'm thinking of bringing Elroy for a 1 night hotel stay next weekend just to expose him to all of the different things when...
