Glad I'm not alone. I had two before this one and this one is nothing like the others in personality. Through all our trials and tribulations I learned so much about training (the others were a piece of cake, my current girl made me work for the successes!) But one thing is that we have a bond...
This is an amusing story - since it has to do with Polo Ponies I'm tagging @LifeofRubie
I thought of putting it in with the dog breeding/breeders discussion, because it really applies to the imperfect dogs as well. Sometimes they are simply the best. ❤️ I didn't download the photos, just use...
I've said many times that Asha was the best teacher I ever had. She taught me that I was wrong in so many ways! She taught me that if I was too tired to push back one day that she would push back even more the next day. Give an inch and she'll make you sorry. I'm most sorry that I didn't have...
And here's a share that I'm putting here because I want to be clear that I know that there are many many breeders that I think are doing all they can and then some. It takes a ton of effort to do things right and things still fall apart. Please know that when I seem endlessly critical that I'm...
Not laughing at you, just the way you said it.
I've got bears here, but never had one on the property, but most of the other neighbors have them on their critter cams. But they aren't fenced like I am. A bear could easily climb over it, but I guess they just don't bother. 🤷♀️
Yes, I do understand that. But my take on it is that the Doberman has so many other chances for ailments now, why add one more? All a breeder has to do is say, "this boy is not for me as my girl is a carrier" - and move on to find a clear boy.
As one old horse vet said "if you only have one...
I think you are exactly right. I think the suggested 4 changes are spot on. I hate things being required, but it's probably the only way to make it happen. Right now I would say it would never pass the board of the DPCA to even be written up as a suggestion. In fact, I'd say each 1 - 4 wouldn't...
Yes, Clear female would be the only way to not create an affected. There is nothing at all wrong with carriers, except if you have a carrier bitch you are limited to only clear males, cutting your breeding options way down, unless you want to gamble on creating an affected puppy. Obviously it...
LOL, except mine. She wasn't cuddly ever, even as a puppy wouldn't fall asleep near anyone, only in the crate or the x-pen. She didn't like being petted or rubbed on, generally didn't like being touched much at all, just play and romp and zoom and be crazy. Little by little she began liking her...
My assumptions have been way off, until I looked at the big-big picture, which took me a long time. Years.
I thought most everybody would be in favor of breeding first for healthy dogs and 2nd for whatever they personally wanted. But after years of observation, most people just want what they...
It may very well be about the only way to get a puppy from these old lines! Do let us know if you bring this into reality!
I don't have time to work on it right now, but it would be fun to follow the pedigrees of his sons to see if any progeny are around and at stud. He produced Swift Run dogs...
From what I observe, very few breeders really care. They are breeding either for purpose and prove it through working abilities or breeding for looks and prove it through show, or breed to make money by breeding something "special" - color, size, cuteness, popularity, doodles, etc. etc.
So I...
When AI started being seen in conversations everywhere, it took me a while to adjust my brain from instantly reading "artificial insemination". Like, a LONG while. My brain just instantly translated it to making foals or puppies. 😅
I think all yearling elk and deer start with no branches. I have a small collection of shed spikes. There's a small deer antler with 2 points in there (I went to take a photo for you and I'm like "what's that doing in my bundle of spikes?" but the rest are elk spikes. I worked at a big ranch...
As @Ddski5 mentioned, try doing something WITH him, that involves both of you interacting and rewards that are meaningful to him. If something that use to get him excited is now boring or he doesn't want to expend the energy, then maybe take him for a check up and a general blood work panel to...
They are our main squirrel in my neck of the woods. The one that ran at me was across the way on a neighbors property. The ones that are on my property just act like normal squirrels. 😅 But they have the dogs to deal with here. They ARE the prettiest of all the squirrel family I think.
