You may be correct that things have been watered down but also consider how many people have Dobermans that never even TRY to work or use their dogs for anything other than 'another pet'. If the owner never does stuff with the dog then the dog is never going to done stuff. :)

There have been aggression studies that show a chance of an INCREASE in aggression in altered females. Not something I would want to test out for myself on a dog if that dog was already one that I considered to be slightly closer to the dominant / aggressive side of the spectrum.
