    Doberman Cross Breeding Project

@JanS I looked into this awhile back: The AKC has this for purebred but not registered dogs: https://www.akc.org/register/information/purebred-alternative-listing-pal/ And this for cross breeds: https://www.akc.org/register/information/canine-partners/get-started/

    Doberman Cross Breeding Project

In this scenario where ouctcrossing for more heart healthy, you are NOT eliminating a flaw, as in albinism... But in the interest of the show purists, the heart heathly dogs could be labeled something like "x" for cross or "h" for heart, to ID the not pure bloods.

    Doberman Cross Breeding Project

Yeah, thats the issue if I understand the standpoint of breed club purists: once you introduce non Dobe blood, is it a Dobe? I'm reminded that the dalmation outcross was easy as it was one well identified genetic fix, as opposed to DCM which is polygenic- many variables we are not sure of in...

Thanks @Ravenbird I somehow found a way from the Pet Owner version of the app to Breeder side with Matchmaker...its extra $ for that feature, and becuz I am cheap and I did not want to take the chance to misrepresent BYB as pedigreed which is required, so I flipped back to get an example of...

    Doberman Cross Breeding Project

So, now lets brainstorm on names. The GSDs have King Shepherds, and Slovakia Shepherds, or was that Czech Wolfdogs? How about Heart Healthy Dobes? I do see Bred for Heart on AKC https://www.akc.org/breeder-programs/akc-bred-with-heart-program/

This is my understanding as well. And for my peace of mind, advance info on possible DCM on just "a BYB pet dobe" I intend to do echos and holters every two years with bnp blood test and ascultstion by dobe experienced vet in the off years. Experienced dobe folk know if you get early warning...

    Doberman Cross Breeding Project

I think we are on the same side here: to the betterment of the breed. Not to beat a dead horse, but As I understand it, careful outcrossing to reduce DCM then back breeding to "pure enough doberman" is how to do so. As @Ravenbird has mentioned its been done with dalmations, and How its being...

    Doberman DCM

@Nordika if you are replying to me in re: "links" no worries. I put stuff out there I have found thats interesting to me, at this stage of learning...the genetic stuff is particularly challenging, and what I notice is thats all good, but the practical hands-on what works from people in the breed...

    Doberman Cross Breeding Project

Its already happening. The FKC "fix DCM in dobes" project thats been blessed by the German Kennel Club, is proof, top down that some breed enthusiasts and national kennel clubs are willing to repair the genetic health issues caused by Popular Sire syndrome and line inbreeding. I read that some...

You're welcome! PS: on the proBNP blood test, the science on this physical test as "early warning on heart problems" is advancing, so there is good news always ahead, as we learn more: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6335507/ Found from here...

Here is a good explanation with some pushback by the Finnish Kennel Club https://www.kennelliitto.fi/en/about-us/news/upcoming-eu-regulation-will-steer-dog-breeding-more-commercial-direction-towards-large-kennel-units The history of dog breeds is fascinating, and the co-evolution with...

And thanks @Nordika for the FKC link to the doberman outcross project. For those new to the breed or just now digging further on DCM, @Renzo Red its a Very good explanation on the problem in DCM and I'm looking for updates to come. I suppose someone could email the point of contact for more...

    Doberman Cross Breeding Project

@Sunje yes, first post on this topic, posted by OP @Ddski5 : That last sentence referencing the FKC creating a separate registry speaks to @Ravenbird mention of how DPCA handles z factor dogs, and maybe the pathway to do something similar here in the US with AKC/DPCA blessing, or collaboration...

    Is the doberman doomed?

Yes, iirc both Betterbred and VGL offer the genomic testing, that are the same approach but not sure if the same lab or exact same test. I asked a couple dobe (and other breeds) breeders in forums here and elsewhere and the answer is the use for creating litters by pairing dogs is worth it...

    Doberman Cross Breeding Project

Th Thanks! I only know from that FKC notice and reading more, and coincidentally running into a couple on dog beach with a young Howavart, and they told me the name of NY area breeder. I dont recall the Gordon being mentioned as in the early mix on dobes from what I have read up to know, and...

embark results show DCM1 and DCM2 Markers

What @JanS said. Correlation is not causation on DCM markers. We really dont know how it works but lots of science is being done, in genetics. Responsible breeders start doing the actual physical tests that show early symptoms or indicators: echo and holter at 2, and every year after. If you...
