Guess who got skunked

Don't know what skunks smell like but from all your reactions I'd rather face killer koalas and snakes!
The spray is basically sulphur based, so think rotten eggs, cabbage and garlic. I don't know the reason that it can't be removed, but it is notorious for lingering for days or weeks no matter how much you wash the area. If one could just bathe the dog and be rid of it, there wouldn't be such drama over getting sprayed. And then a car trip... the smell just wafts around and begins to permeate the car interiors. So, no skunks in Australia? Count yourself lucky!

Iā€™ve used simple green to get rid of skunk spray before it worked quite well. If you have ever seen the spray on material and not dogs itā€™s actually quite greasy.

Sorry to laugh and joke. I am sure it is no laughing matter on your end- but ours go back to when they were pups. Glad to know ā€œiron clad Kaiserā€ is injury free.

Thanks for the tip! I had some enzyme cleaner from last time which worked well but not as much this time. Iā€™ll check out this product. Especially since it seems this may happen more often than I expected.

Itā€™s all good! Iā€™d say I was way more successful about it the first time but I was also more thorough. This time, it was a bit of gong show with the timing of this trip. Also, really didnā€™t expect skunks this time of year :-/

Whatā€™s the story on this? Out on a trail and Kaiser went after a skunk?

So on a serious noteā€¦
How bad can messing with a skunk be??
1. Can there be enough spray to be toxic to the dog?
2. If it goes straight in the eye, can it blind them?
3. Can it cause major infection in the eyes or nose?

Well that's true too. I mean it's spring here, so I would expect Critters to be coming out soon. But so far I have seen very little. Except for a couple of raccoons that scurried across our driveway at about 7:00 p.m. the other day.šŸ¤—

I'd have to research that, but I think I've read that spray hitting the eyes is the worst thing. Not sure it can cause blindness, but burning would be intense.

My biggest concern is that skunks carry rabies. Since I imagine everyone on this forum has vaccinated dogs, rabies itself would not be a problem, but rabid animals are unpredictable and vicious. Skunks seen in the day time are a HUGE red flag. They are nocturnal and a rare sight in daylight.

After reading through all of this again, I feel that I need to have skunk supplies ready! :wideyed:. Spring IS here....and everything is coming to life.....motivated to be prepared! ;). There is nothing worse than that fresh skunk smell....it actually burns my eyes; just the smell of it. Completely different than the scent far away, or road kill. Just horrible.

No to all. Think of it like mace or something similar. It's very uncomfortable but there are no lasting effects (except the smell) unless there might be an underlying condition like asthma or something.

@JanS We came out of a deep freeze a couple weeks ago so I guess I shouldnā€™t have been surprised but it wasnā€™t on anyones mind.

@Ddski5 Kaiser was on a neighborhood walk at night with my hb so he was off leash when this happened. I want to believe that he was smart enough to remember the first encounter because this time he was sprayed mostly on the side of his neck and torso vs all in his face last time. It seems like he tried to run away but it was already too late.

@Two Dobes best to be prepared! Donā€™t forget the peroxide!

Awww. I want to believe he wanted to get away too. Hope it's all better now & that you are having luck with all the shampoos & concoctions to get the smell off.

Uuuugh... enjoying a delightfully cool evening with a fire in the backyard and a stupid skunk wanders into the yard behind the shed.

Rubie went AFTER it. It actually didn't spray until about 30 seconds into the whole thing but of course she got it right to the face and then just blind rage. It somehow ended up clamping onto her lip, she's shaking her head, screeching, and it's dark and really hard to see but my husband is saying it's ripping her face off (which it did really look like), then it somehow looked like it clamped onto her leg. Eventually we get it off her and throw her right into my car and rush off to the ER vet.

There was blood all over the patio, on my socks (I forgot to even put shoes on when I left for the vet), I don't take a close look because I can't with gruesome stuff.

This dumb dumb... you can see where the skunk grabbed on but it's barely puncture marks, nothing ragged, torn, or ripped. Doesn't even need stitches. We need to go to our regular vet tomorrow to get antibiotics. Didn't see any other marks on her although I look closer tomorrow.

That is all great news but now my car STIIIIIIIIIINKS. I did have a dog bed in the trunk and that's where I put her so took that out as soon as I got home but omg... it's putrid. We have a car bomb deodorizer thing coming but... Any tried and true methods?

Dingo getting her baking soda, peroxide, dawn soak down in the garage when we got home. It is really a miracle that left top lip still exists.
