Ear cropping question

Hello,

This is my first time cropping a dogs ears. I had my dobies ears cropped at 10 weeks(10/22/21) the vet sent him home with bandages and kind of posted, after 5 days we had a follow up and they removed all bandaging.

His ears are flopping, no cone. My concern is one ear is erect and the other flops. Is this ok? Will it effect his ears standing up later on? I’m worried the cartilage will break or harden and it will not stand later on. Please advise.

Thank you!
Jerry

Look at that happy little face! <3

Ears are "typically" up on a cup until stitches are removed and once healed completely they are posted. However, some vets will let them hang with nothing until stitches are removed, then post. Cartilage won't start to harden until pup is through with teething (6-8 mo).

I would recommend that once his ears are healed, get started with posting.

Once the stitches are out and the ears are healed then you start posting. Posting must be done through teething at least, to make sure the cartilage in the ear is set and depending on the length of the crop you could be posting 9 to 18 months. The posts should stay in at all times, the only time the posts should be out is for cleaning the ears and putting in new posts. You should never leave the posts out for more than an hour, you only want them out for as long as it takes to clean, dry and repost. There are many articles and video links on this site to learn the correct way to post, you just need to find the method that works best for you.
Most members on this site, including myself, have posted our dogs ears. It can be a little scary and a bit challenging when you first start out. Ask as many questions as you want, there are many friendly and knowledgeable people on this forum who will be more than willing to share their experiences and offer advice as well as moral support! You got this!

As said above…

Read the puppy forum and watch the posting videos.

Learn to post yourself!! I did not know shit about ears, stitches, posts, tape, etc…. I watched the videos and read this entire site and learned how myself.

You can do it!!

What a cute pup! Just let them hang until the stitches are out and the edges are healed, than post, post, post... You are way better off doing it yourself and not letting the vet do it since they leave them out too long and use way too much tape.

Everything said above and you will be fine just keep doing it and it will turn it great! What a good looking pup can’t wait to see more and welcome from NY..

Thank you everyone for the advice and kind words! I definitely feel relieved, and excited to see how baby Loki’s ears come out.

Loki….
What an awesome name!

My second choice was either Floki or Loki.
