Almost neuter time...

That is ridiculous! My girl had a spay (which is much more invasive then a neuter) PLUS a mammary mass removed and it wasn't quite $700 (and that included her pain meds & antibiotics). She is a vWD CARRIER.

Maybe consider postponing and in the meantime get a DNA test for vWD. Once you have genetic results, find a vet that isn't going to rake you over the coals.

Wow that doesn't sound right at all! A neuter is so less complicated. I can see warning you about a transfusion but the base price for his neuter is ridiculous. Do you feel like he needs to be neutered? Maybe it would just be better to leave him intact unless a problem arises.

Thats crazy! I need to get my boy neutered per breeder contract, otherwise I wouldn’t bother. I was thinking of getting him tacked also because the thought of bloat terrifies me. See if you can find somewhere that will do a vasectomy. Unfortunately, theres no one in my area. And my vet didn’t even know it existed for dogs.

That price is absolutely insane!!! I'd definitely wait, have your own test done, then find a neutral vet.

Albert is a carrier and his laser neuter was $295. (just looked up the receipt) and that included blood work for heart worm and tick borne diseases.

So I'm glad it's not just me that was blown away by this price haha thank you guys for your helpful experience. Breeder contract says we will neuter him as well. I did reach out to the breeder and asked if she knew of other dogs from his litter getting spayed or neutered and she said she personally knew of 2 that were done and both with no problems. She said my guys mom was a carrier and dad was clear so she wouldn't suspect an issue.

I reached out to another vet today that thankfully quoted me lower but was coming in at $1100. My breeder gave me another one to look into and I'll call them next week. If I couldn't find a vet that said less than 3k I didn't care what contact said he'd be keeping his jolly balls:rofl:

These prices are mind blowing to me. Anything close to a thousand would probably make me pass too. My breeder hasn’t contacted me since I got Jasper, I doubt she will call to check up in his neuter. Well see how long Jasper gets to keep his lol!

That’s really expensive! I wouldn’t have expected the price to be more than $500, I mean they are just hanging there and apparently they don’t even remove the sack just the contents. Anyway, I wouldn’t be overly concerned about the contract. Just because you are keeping him intact doesn’t mean you are allowing him to reproduce and that is what the breeder is really trying to control.

My niece just sent me this:

Augusta: East Coast Shelter Clinic. Low cost spay/neuter for dogs and cats. Dog spay or neuter start at $250 with proof of rabies vaccination. Cat neuter $75 with proof of rabies vaccination, cat spay start at $90 with proof of rabies vaccination. Vaccination can be performed at time of surgery if needed. Call for appointments and details: 626-2893. Some other services in addition to spay/neuter available. Clinic does not take vouchers.

Yeah, so genetically it's impossible for him to be vWD AFFECTED.
That's what I was going to say too. They can't do elective surgeries like that right now anyway so you have some time to do more research. Heck, it would be cheaper for you to travel, even to here and have it done than to have it done there for that much.

In just 3 weeks Red will finally be getting his neuter. The only thing I'm nervous about is the fact that I was unable to find a vet to tack his stomach at the same time for less than $4,200. I'm hoping if I'm just mindful of eating and all of that I will never run into the issue of bloat but man does it make me worried. He is very deep chested but I just don't have the money to go to the specialist that will do it all.

Anyone want to re-assure me that it will be okay? Haha Right now as I go through my divorce and all this other chaos my big boy is my rock and I couldn't imagine anything happening to him :love:Snapchat-1505791285.jpg

Oh of course he'll do great and the hard part will be keeping him semi quiet for the 10 or so days after.

I hope you found a vet to do the neuter for 1/10th of that $4,200. I'm still shocked that that price, even if it did include the tack. I wouldn't worry about the stomach tack as much with a male since I believe it usually happens way more often in females.

$4,200?! I don’t blame you for skipping the tacking for now. That price just seems unreal.

Can you wait until this virus is done and find another more normal vet out of state? I wouldn’t worry too much about breeder contract right now due to whats happening. Unless your breeder specifically reached out to you for proof of neutering.

As far as bloat, I hear you. I think about it daily. I have strict rules when Jasper can drink water and eat. Especially after exercise. I want to get him tacked too. I hope I don’t run into the same issue for price. Im wondering if embrace will cover it. I don’t think so

@JanS thank you for the confidence with the tack part, it just helps to have someone who knows the breed reassure me as crazy as it might sound!

@Lizbeli that price was crazy but thankfully the vet where my friend is a vet tech are going to do his neuter mid may. That vet just wasn't comfortable doing the tack. She does want to run a cloting test just to put her mind at ease. This one quoted me for $900 once pain meds and everything are added in. The fact that he's 110lb plays into it too. I could probably find a place that would go a couple hundred cheaper for the neuter but this is a good vet and I like the piece of mind with having my best friend there with him.

I will just continue with the strict no eating and exercising policy. The only time I worry about that is when he goes to Grammys and plays with her dog lol, there is no getting them to take a break.

I just went through getting Preacher neutered on March 16th. We ended up going to our breeders vet 70 miles away because I couldn't find anyone local that I felt comfortable with. One of my requirements was it be done by lazer, none of our local vets offered that. Our breeders vet recommended doing a stomach tack as did our breeder. I considered it but decided against it hoping I wasn't making a mistake. The two things I always do is elevated feeding and a minimum of 1 hour rest time in his kennel after eating. I also wanted to mention our total price was $305.00 including pain meds. I'm glad it"s over and he is all healed up. Good luck with Red, hope all goes well.

Curious, did you notice any change in his behavior?

That price would be amazing! We are set for May 15 but with a cost of 3 times that for the person I'm comfortable with. I'm glad he's all healed up and you were able to find a place that worked so well for you!

I see you are located in Maine, maybe prices are just that much higher than Missouri. I actually was quoted $190.00 by one of the local vets. We are in a small town and she doesn't do laser. Our other two vets did not offer laser either so price wasn't a factor. I stressed on getting him done and finally decided I would take him to our breeders vet. I'm glad I drove to the City and dealt with our breeders vet.
