A Very Smelly Night..

Story time! Lol we were taking Haku for his nightly walk/ run around at the neighborhood park/field. We let him off leash and he runs around, it’s at 10-11pm so no one is usually out.

Me and my boyfriend were talking by the playground and we looked over at Haku and he was rolling on the ground, which he tends to do when a dog has peed in a certain spot so I didn’t think much of it... till we went over. At first my eye were really bad I guess and same with my boyfriends cause he asked “hey what’s that” and I thought it was a large piece of bark... until we took a closer took and realized Haku had been rolling around on a half decomposed opossum.. lol

It snowed here and yesterday all the snow melted away and I’m pretty sure it’s been hiding dead under the snow.. until last night xP

it was the worst smelling thing I’ve even smelt in my life and I’m pretty good with nasty smells to be honest.

He had so much gunk and nasty stuff all over him and on his collar, ect. I refused to touch him and his collar so we walked home off leash. Went inside and got gloves and brought him to the bathroom were he got a bath and a very long one at that.

he’s lucky he’s cute

anyone else had to deal with their dog rolling around in dead animals ? Lol

Ezri does not really like going into her back at all unless she’s inside the house on the couch or blankets.

she might grab it and try to run, but no interest in rolling in it.

I have heard of dogs rolling in poop but not dead animals! Did the bath fix the smell?

Kaiser once held a dead ferret in his mouth like it was a prize. The body of the ferret was long and thin and completely stretched out stiff so it was as if he was holding a thick branch until you saw the fur :facepalm:It makes you realize that no matter how special they seem as a breed, these are the moments where they are “just a dog”

Every weekend we go to a fairground with an acre pond that we walk around. Ragnar loves it, chases birds, bugs, etc.... He tends to get out front of me too much.

He was out there, he stopped, smelled, and started skidding and rolling around on the grass.

I thought, oh shit he is into something. It was a decomposed fish carcass, a very large Carp.

Oh my gosh the ride home was horrible. An old, strong, nasty fish smell had me gagging all the way home.

I rarely give Ragnar a bath, maybe every five months and only if he is muddy or stinky but his ass was washed twice when we made it home!!

honestly same! He only goes on his back with his feet in the air on the couch. I gave up on trying to teach roll over cause he refuses to go on his back on the hardwood.

he was mostly bending down, rubbing his cheek on it and then sliding onto his side. So nasty lol

the bath did help! It was probably in my dead but I kept smelling a faint smell of it lingering afterwards though, although this morning smelt nothing thank god. Lol

when they do things like this I agree it definitely sheds light on the fact they are dogs and will do dog things ( and nasty things sadly )

Ooo rotten fish lol I can just imagine the smell of that one too xP maybe we should keep emergency masks in our cars for moments like these lol

Rotten fish!? That’s absolutely awful.

I had a golden retriever that rolled all over a dead bird. All if the fur in the front of his chest was stuck together in a thick brown gunk. One if the worst smells ever. On top of that, Goldens take A LOT more work to bathe, thats for sure.

I have really tried to rationalize this.....
Why would they roll in something dead and rotten??

I stopped burning my brain with this question when I also asked why does Ragnar eat goose and cat poop?!?! LOL....

lol I had to google that cause I was wondering why too. It came up with the fact it may be An instinct they still have from wild dogs that would rub themselves in things like poo or dead animals to help mask their own send when hunting for prey lol

that or they are just nasty :p

Both our Boxer and GSP used to love rolling in smelly things. The darn Boxer did it every time I'd take him out before bed so that involved staying up much later than I intended since he slept with me.
The GSP didn't care if it was a really bad smell or a good smell so he just loved the perfume samples that came in magazines and stuff.

The carcass roll! It has been a thing with Jazz right from the start. Not only carcass, but cat poo, heron poo, cow pee or poo etc. She still will roll with joy in stuff if I'm not watching closely, but will mostly leave dead stuff alone since we started with the ecollar and "leave it" commands. I also think it is an instinct to mask their own smell. I haven't had a dog that didn't like a good carcass roll!

The worst time. It had been raining and she picked up a wet and soggy wallaby carcass. It was at the stage where it was just skin covered bones with very little flesh left, but had rehydrated in the rain, and reeked! This was pre ecollar so she was grabbing it, throwing it, rolling on it and there was nothing I could do. The little devil wasn't letting me anywhere near her prize! So we made our way home with her belting around having shaken all the bones out and just the soggy, stinky hide draped all over her like a shawl.:sick::sick: No amount of bathing got all that stink out! She had multiple baths over a few days until it was down to bearable levels. :green:

Oh, and even grosser if possible! On a holiday with friends earlier this year we were bush camping and their dog came up all big cheesy grin and covered in goop! Wretched stench! She had gone off and dug up a human poop and had a really good roll. I didn't have to do the dog wash, but I did have to travel in the back of the car with the dogs the next day. :green::green::green:

Yes, it's just as well we love em!

The moment of dread..................when your dog trots up to you looking all sticky, with a big happy grin on!

Oh, and Haku is VERY cute, so all is forgiven I'm sure. Just have to watch that head twist and collapsing shoulder which means there is a stinky target for a roll!

:facepalm:Oh how gross, my dobes never did, but dogs growing up rolled, so did our horse, but nothing stinky for the horse.

We live in the country all our dogs find dead things in the woods and roll in it ( just gross ) but Ace has been the worst he seems to find ALL the possum pooh and roll in it. That a greasy smelly mess dawn dish soap is only thing that gets rid of that
