Breeder and COI levels

Hey everyone!

I am starting my search for a doberman puppy and am hoping y'all might be able to help me out.

I'm wanting a Euro doberman (or at least a 50/50 euro and American). I have been talking to South Paws in Georgia and she seems like a good breeder with some beautiful and healthy dogs. Any recommendations for other breeders or has anyone had a puppy from South Paws?

Also, I know dobe's tend to have high COI's, but what levels would be considered low for them, and what would be considered too high and that I should avoid? I've been seeing some saying they were "very low" at 25%, is this accurate for a dobie?

Thank you!

I see you are from Oklahoma, have you not checked in Texas? There are a lot of reputable breeders in Texas.

I have looked in Texas but haven't come across a breeder yet that I like. The fee I've talked to seem to be more of the "breed simply for profit" type which I don't want to support of course.

The others I came across in Texas seem to be only American, and I'm looking for Euro!

It's interesting that you mention South Paw Dobermans. I just found them online the other night as I poked around. No offense, but I was not impressed, overall.

None taken! Do you have any breeders across the US you might suggest?
That is the question, isn't it? I'm determined, this time around, to not be left feeling desperate when it's time to find my next pup. So I constantly have my ears perked for potentially viable breeders. I, too, prefer Euro lines.

I know a couple of members here have imported from Lipar Land – a breeder in Serbia. I personally am still too scared to try importing, but they have had success and have found her honest.

There is a relatively new member here who breeds Euro Dobes. I don't know her personally. All I know is what she has written on here, and what is presented on her website. I am intrigued. She is, shoot, who is she? I forget her user name at the moment. Anybody? She's located in Goldendale, WA. The word "tech" is in her user name, if I recall.

I have a Euro Dobe, but he's from working lines and that's a different creature. My previous Dobe was something like 1/2 & 1/2 Euro and N.A. lines. Also a working Dobe.

I very much value what working-line Dobes offer, but it comes at a tradeoff – most notably for me, in the appearance department.

Edit: I don't think the word "tech" is in her user name. That may be another member. I think the breeder's name is @DanBar

Things have changed. Where they used to use mathematical equations to predict COI through pedigree, NOW it is so much more accurate (and higher) using DNA testing. But to answer your question Yes, COI of 25 is pretty low. Lowest I have heard of so far is 21.

Did you talk to Laural Harris in the Dallas area? Omni Paramus Dobermans? She is more on the Euro side but has nice dogs.
Most important to me is protection. Otherwise, I won't be showing or anything like that. Just need a protective cuddle bug. I am also very active in the outdoors department so a boy who can keep up on long hikes and all that jazz.

In all honesty, the last time I got a puppy was from the days when you opened your local newspaper classifieds ads and picked one out! My current dog is part doberman and about 10 now, but I adopted her at about a year old.

So it has been a bit shocking and frustrating trying to find a moral, good breeder for what I want. It seems our technology advances have made it much easier for a lot out there to become back yard breeder types, which is sad. And especially given the finicky genetics lines we face with dobes. I know there are some good ones out there so I figured a forum would be a start for some good guidance!

And desperate is a good way to put it. I've been wanting a puppy for a decade now, so to say my brain is affected by boiling-over puppy fever is an understatement. Mixed with a difficult shopping task, and it hasn't been the funnest.

But I do prefer a working line doberman as well, like you. I still think the working euro lines are gorgeous!

From what I've seen, hardcore working line Dobes are not impressive looking. Every effort has been taken to achieve maximum performance on the Schutzhund or sport field. It has always befuddled me, though, because supposedly the Doberman written standard defines the ultimate performance machine. You know, every proportion, every angle precisely laid out. Why, then, do those Dobermans who achieve on the sport field stray from the standard so?

You should check with Laural (Omni Paramus)
Or Brandi at Masaya’s Dobermans in Little Rock Arkansas. Brandi has a little more serious dogs but would still be great for what you are looking for. Litter she has now is a repeat breeding of my boy Blaze. Definitely would need strong leader and obedience but great energy and loves to run.

A couple other breeders for you to look into is Swift Run dobermans in KY & Von Schwarz Dobermann Kennel in Pittsburgh

Don't let location choose your puppy. Find a puppy that is right for you and make the drive. I drove from Chicago to Long Island NY to pick up my boy.

Just now seeing this, @Doberman Gang both your dogs are so good, and @My2Girls that Shadow is gorgeous! Question, if I want working lines and let the breeder know I don't want the high end drive puppy of the litter, but do want some, how accurate do the puppy tests predict this? I feel like the working lines will provide me with the ability to bring it out in training, but not be saddled with a dog that is more drive than I want.
