Worried about my Dobie pup after ear crops

I am new to this forum I signed up hoping to get some peace of mind. I just had my 9 week old Dobie ears cropped last Friday. I showed up to pick up my pup (Kobe) the next day. When I got there the doctor met me with concerning news. Telling me that he did not know what was wrong with my pup. He was still very drowsy/ groggy from the anesthesia but vet mentioned he had never seen this type of behavior before usually pups are up and going with in 24 hrs. Which I know by experience. He had Kobe hooked up to IV and mentioned he would run test on him and would keep him under his care at no additional cost he wanted to roll out any internal issues kidney, liver etc.. today Monday I called in the AM to see how he was doing. Dr. Said he was doing better but not fully recovered. He mentioned he was more alert today and had been eating and drinking water but he did not want to stand up. And when they tried to stand him up his back legs gave out. I visited my pup as soon as I could. I brought him food and my lil girls to visit with him Kobe was crying when I got there , I fed him and he ate very well definitely more alert but you could tell he was still out of it. I tried to stand him up but his back left leg looked like it had no strength at this point the dr mentioned that all testing from heart to kidneys, liver , blood , diabetes, etc.. came back good he mentioned that at this point it could be a neurological issue messing with his nerves system although he was better he mentioned there is still a risk of death. He asked to keep him for longer to continue to study him and try to get him healthy and going again. I am concerned my family and I specially my daughters fell in love with Kobe instantly and immediately got attached. We are worried that he will not make it and its seriously a very saddening thought. I keep thinking that maybe the doctor did not use good practice or may have done something wrong during the surgery but this is the same vet that has done all my dogs ears for the past 15 years and Never had an issue. I am coming here to share my story and situation in Hope's that some one can shed some light on what may have possibly happened and for advise on what to do and hopefully a good news story from experience. Thank you all who take the time to read my post and try and help. We love our Kobe and we are praying he comes back home soon :(

Jeesh-wow....

So sorry to hear this. Be it known that many people around the world are on this forum. Therefore many people around the world are thinking of you and Kobe. Knowing this always helped me in my times of worry and fret....

Hey. So sorry to hear of your precious pup going through this! I just now saw this thread.

I really don't know what in the world could have gone wrong there. I'm pretty clueless on the medical end of things. I cannot suggest whether is was Dr./staff error, or just a fluke. Living creatures are always an unknown.

You and your family really have my sympathy.

As you know from experience, ear cropping is a safe procedure and the pups bounce back from the anesthesia quickly.

Hoping for a quick turnaround for you!

I am so sorry this is happening to your family and Kobe. Fingers crossed that the Vet can find out what is going on and get Kobe healthy and back to his family quickly!

Could it be Wobblers? That typically affects the hind legs. I've never heard of it affecting such a young dog though, but maybe you can suggest it to your dr since Dobermans can get this.

Also, check in with your breeder as they might know of an issue within their breeding lines - and if they don't know, they should be made aware of the current situation.

Good luck and I really hope the little guy pulls through. Keep us posted!

So sorry you, Kobe and your family are going through this. Hope he's home soon.

They've done all that testing, what about a spine x-ray?

I'm so sorry you're going through this and prayers are sent that everything normalizes soon. It sounds like you have a great vet who wants to get to the bottom of it, which is really a plus. Please keep us updated.

Thank you for the prayers we need all we can get.. we are hoping it will pass soon as well. Yes they truly are a great vet been using them for 17 yrs but you really know when things go south how good they really are and they have definitely shown they truly care for pets under their care as if they were theirs. I will def be keeping you all updated.

Hi there, any more news? I'm a vet nurse and I specialized in crop surgeries for many years. My heart goes out to you and your family. As safe as anesthesia is nowdays it is never 100% safe. Did they offer you pre-anesthetic blood work? What anesthesia protocol did they use? It would be super helpful to know. Not using the back leg/legs can sometimes happen if an injection is given accidentally in the sciatic nerve... That will go away after a few days. If they used opioids they can be reversed with noloxone... Did he get too cold under anesthesia? We always kept our ear crops on "bear hugger" heaters during and after surgery... There are so many factors to slow surgical recovery... Did you have him checked for Von Willobrands? That would be more of a bleeding issue but it would be nice to know... Please keep us informed our thoughts are with you!

Just catching up on this, and yes, you are in all our thoughts and we are hoping for a good outcome for Kobe. Keep us updated and hang in there.

Kobe is Home! Recouping. All tests came back negative, doctor believes it was just a negative reaction to the anesthesia, he did not see any health issues with him and expects him to make a full recovery. Thank you all for the feed back and prayers. We'll keep you all posted. For now we are just thankful he was able to come home.

I am so happy to hear this fantastic news! Glad he’s home and doing well.
