5 months, how do these ears look?

I just hear terrible stories of people doing it too tight and the ear tissue dying. I don’t feel confident doing it.
I completely understand. Are you paying the vet per post or was the posting included in the crop? The only reason why I’m asking is - what you’ve described- thick, heavy ear leather and a long crop it’s not unusual to keep posting for well over a yr. Just ask @AresMyDobie. So if it’s included, I’d probably suck it up and just keep going. If not can you ask the vet/tech to show you how to post? So you can get comfortable posting.

Yes I am paying per post. Yes I can ask him he’s super nice he has been cropping dobes for 20 years he specializes in him that’s why I’m surprised with all his experience that he would steer me wrong, but oh well like I said I go back Friday so I’ll post them then.

Oh no! really? They’ve been out of posts for 5 days and standing the same. I think he’ll just have a permanent bend. If I see any sign of drooping or severe bending I will post ASAP. What about the breathe right strips? Any opinions on that ? Would any of you be happy if that was your Doberman and that was what his ears looked like permanently ?
To answer your specific question: I would be happy if that was the way my Dobe's ears looked permanently. I'd be happier if they were straighter up and down, but the way they are is just fine in terms of appearance. It is similar to how my previous Dobe's ears looked.

If he is finished teething, then you might indeed be done posting. I agree, though, be super vigilant to any sign of drooping and post right away. I do not think breathe-right strips would be the tool to use for those ears in terms of the slight bend in the middle. The strips are for helping higher up.

I certainly know how you feel about wanting to be done posting. Considering yourself done and hearing it suggested you start posting again is honestly a blow, I know.

How much do they flop/bend when he runs around?

Keep posting....learn to post.

Ears will look better straight vertical than with bend in middle.

You have done it this long, what’s a couple more months compared to the next 10 years???

Don’t give in.....

This was exactly what I was going to say. :) My first Doberman had a slight bend like that and I loved it. But the fact that he's only 5 months old makes me hesitate. And his ears look a little straighter in the Avatar, which was right after you took the posts out. Which leads me to believe that now they are starting to flop a bit and maybe that bend is the start of a flop. Like everyone is saying, posting for a bit longer is worth it in the long run. :thumbsup2:

As mention yes my boy has a long show crop and thick ear leather. It took 14 months of ear posting and another 4 months in breathe right strips for them to perfect. I posted him consistently no long breaks in between only about ten mins to maybe an hour if he was swimming or going to the beach or being bathed.
My female only took 7 months but she has a medium crop and thin ear leather.
Most dogs aren’t done teething till 7-8 months old. Teething isn’t done when all the baby teeth are out. It’s done when all the adult are completely grown in.
I agree with everyone else, start posting yourself and go for a couple more months. Posting ear although scary at first is super simple. You won’t kill the ear if you just place the tape on and squeeze it on the ears. Plus it’s good to know anyways in case you need to replace a post and the vet isn’t open. To be honest my cropping vets are terrible at after care. My boy was done by one of the best surgeons in the country and their posting job was piss poor. I took it off of him immediately, he looked like maleficent.
Anyways welcome and keep posting.

He’s beautiful and so worth it!

After I got the hang of doing the posting, I actually enjoyed the bonding experience. I was one of the few students in puppy class that could touch Shadow all over with no reaction.

Thank you! Yeah I don’t have the confidence to do it. I don’t want to screw it up so I stick to the vet doing it. That’s great that you do it on your own I’m jealous lol

Oh man... that’s a ton of tape and they don’t need to keep bridging. I would seriously start to post yourself.
I’ve never had any problem with his postings and it just looks like a lot of tape it’s jusy smaller cut pieces so it looks like a lot

They look great but his need a bridge bc they go outward too much. Sucks to hear everyone say everything is wrong. I’ve never had any problems with this vet posting he’s very well known and has been doing this for so long.
Taking the bridge away would make him use his ears more as well as setting his ears in the correct position. Bridging to long causes problems with ear placement ;)
Imagine his ears like doing bicep curls :)

Ohhh okay. That makes sense. Should I take it down?

I took it down. That’s his ears alert. I’m holding a toy to get his attention. Good? Now I see why everyone is encouraging me to do it on my own three pieces of tape and a rod thingy and it’s done. I go back to the vet Friday and don’t want to offend him lol. So after I’ll do it on my own.

Don't feel bad. I've been on this board for 10 years and I've heard my share of vets who do not know how to post. They may be excellent at cropping but the aftercare sometimes is something to be desired. I would listen to people here who have posted for a long time, on many dogs, and whose ears are standing beautifully! I've had a doberman in my life for about 25 years but have only posted on my very first. So it's not my expertise anymore LOL. But for a lot of people on here, it is! The one thing I've learned is it does not take a lot of tape to do it correctly. And the funny thing is, most pictures that I have seen where a vet has posted ears, they are completely covered in tape! It doesn't have to be that way to be done correctly. Not only is it a waste of tape, but I feel covering the complete ear with tape is counterproductive. Your boy is gorgeous and taking out the centerpiece was a good idea. Doing it yourself can be frustrating at first but it won't be long before you are a pro! If you run into trouble, just ask someone here. There are many people here to help you!
