Mine grazes like a cow. It's a Dobie thing! The amount of grazing is related to tummy issues but they also just like grass eating. I tested this out by increasing his green toppers, but he still likes grass!

Not all dogs do well on dairy so keep an eye on that too.

You need to be cautious of allowing them to consume too much grass and certain types of grass.
Zoysia grasses is high in silica content and being a rather stiff blade grass, the blades can roll together forming a ball and create a blockage. We have done several surgeries on dogs with foreign body blockages only to find grass was the culprit.
Also any fertilizers or other chemicals used on the lawn can become toxic to them.
It is best to redirect your dog when you find them ‘grazing.’
They do not digest grass, it leaves the body in their stool undigested.

I think dogs eat grass because they like it, not that they are having tummy issues. Just like they will eat their toys. It becomes habit if it is allowed.
To me the risk with this breed is too great to allow eating grass. You may get lucky and never have a problem until it happens to your dog.
Better safe than sorry.

Grass that has been treated with any type of chemical needs to be avoided. Not only eating grass but also they can lick their pads after walking/running on treated grass. Pesticides and herbicides are noted for being one of the leading causes of pet poisoning.

I’m thinking along the same lines as Bri, they eat grass because they enjoy it. They like the taste.

I never treat my grass...as a long time Contractor, with a Degree in Horticulture and Pesticide License, I warn you now...do not treat your lawn! Your dog WILL get sick, maybe not today, but over time your dog will contract some very bad stuff, with no cure...you've been warned.

Yeah, I disallow grass eating. I figure he does some when I'm not looking.

I think that maybe a dog who eats a lot of grass may have a digestive or g.i. issue. Maybe not absorbing what they need from their food, so they naturally crave something else like grass? This can lead to a habit. These are just my thoughts, Of course. I'm not studied on it.

Funny we're talking about this, because just this spring I've noticed as I've been walking dogs for people that they sometimes seem to eat grass when they're hot – as though they think or sense that eating grass will provide moisture or cooling somehow?

The bully breed we were fostering was a major grass eater; and, at the end of our street there are ornamental grasses. I called that her "gourmet grass."

I agree on the topic of treating grass. We try to be a "Pesticide Free Zone." Hard to control what your neighbors do though.

I wonder if you're on to something here. Kaiser will graze on grass in shaded areas of the yard only. And yes, his intake definitely goes up if he is having poop issues.

For sure my two are part cow they graze as much as they eat. The effort to stop them almost is a waste of time, I worry about the other stuff they pick up while doing it more then the grass they eat honestly tho so I stop them if I catch them
