DAVIE, Fla. - Scooby, a Doberman pinscher in training to be a therapy dog, was shot and killed in his owner's front yard on Thanksgiving by a cyclist carrying a gun.

According to Davie police, the man who shot Scooby said the 2-year-old dog had attacked him. But the dog's owner, Dan Abou, said Scooby would have never harmed anyone.
"It's very alarming that someone would be riding a bike with a gun at 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day," Abou said on Friday. "That man came here looking for trouble. I still can't believe this."

Davie Police Capt. Dale Engle said that the incident remains under investigation and that the shooter has not been charged. The man's name was not available on Friday. Engle said the man had a permit for the weapon.

"He told us the dog attacked him and he feared for his life," said Engle. "The dog was not on a leash, but we are still looking at what exactly happened."

By ordinance in Broward County, dogs that are outdoors must remain under direct, physical control of a person using a leash, cord or chain or be kept behind a fence.

Abou said he was cleaning his garage when he heard a gunshot followed by a dog's whimper outside. He said he saw Scooby take a few steps and collapse.

"He gasped and he literally died in my arms," the owner said.
Abou, 24, acknowledged that his dog had been playing in the front yard without a leash while the family was preparing its Thanksgiving meal.

He said most of the residents in his Whispering Pines cul-de-sac neighborhood typically allow their dogs to roam free with no problems. He described his dog as a lovable and friendly pooch who was great with small children.

Abou adopted Scooby from the Doberman Rescue League of Broward in July. The group's president, Grace Brinkman, said the dog was in the initial stages of training to be a therapy dog at senior citizen centers.

The group had found Scooby roaming the streets and looking emaciated, said Brinkman.
"I can't believe he gets rescued from the streets of Miami-Dade only to be shot and killed in Davie," Abou said.

Thursday's incident was at least the second time this year in Broward that a resident shot and killed a unleashed dog.

In February, Fort Lauderdale resident George Doughty told police that his neighbor's dogs, Little Red, a pit bull, and Cleopatra, a Rottweiler, were loose and charged at him and his Rottweiler. Little Red died at the scene, and Cleopatra survived

anyone with a gun has the right to shoot your dog i guess... whats happening here ?

Why would someone be out for a pleasurable bike ride with a gun?????? Why is it ok just because he had a permit for the gun???? Once again I say, why do you carry a gun around unless you have plans to use it???? Pepper spray is just as effective and non-fatal, or a loud horn to frighten away an animal. What kind of society are we becoming that it is normal to go out with a weapon and actually use deadly force, in a neighborhood, with people and children?:censored::wtf:

Wow.......that's........insane. But the one guy said it best,

"It's very alarming that someone would be riding a bike with a gun at 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day," Abou said on Friday. "That man came here looking for trouble. I still can't believe this."

I don't agree with this in any way. This is a very tragic story, along with the one posted the other day. I am one of those people that does have a permit to carry a gun and yes, I do carry my gun everywhere I go. I also know when to use it. The ONLY time I have shot my gun was on my property at targets. I am not one that will shoot for any un-needed purpose. I do have fear of other idiots out there, especially when I was working in a coffee stand. Around here, coffee stand were being robbed left and right, I was also follwed home from school (college) numerous times by different guys, AND there was a dead body found in the middle of the road about a half mile from my house....not to mention there was a girl (19 years old) that was abducted from my school and taken to a secluded area and raped. I'm sorry, there is no way I am leaving my house without a gun again. But I would never shoot anyone or anything for no reason. I don't agree with that and I don't understand why there are idiots out there that think they can do stuff like that. I'm sorry to go :ot: but I'm not against guns, I'm just against idiots using guns for un-needed purposes and then making up lies as to why they shot and killed someone elses dog.

I'd like to know the extent of the man's injuries.. since he says he was 'attacked'. Poor Scooby.:(

Wow... It's rediculous for a cyclist to use lethal force in a neighborhood like that when there are non-lethal options such as pepper spray. I don't have a problem with a permitted person on a bike carrying a gun at all, but it shouldn't be the first line of defence from a dog in a residential neighborhood.

By ordinance in Broward County, dogs that are outdoors must remain under direct, physical control of a person using a leash, cord or chain or be kept behind a fence.

I am not for shooting dogs - I am just as concerned about people riding around on their bikes carrying a gun. However, If you ride a lot and have been attackeds numerous times you might see it differently.

Dogs are suppose to be leashed and under control. I don't care what neighborhood you live in dogs are not suppose to run loose. Almost all dog attacks reported are from a dog that ONLY got loose that one time. Right. Not to mention that suddenly they are ALL in training to be service dogs - when did it start - the day they were shot???

If you break the law there are concenquences - PLEASE don't let your dogs run loose - I don't let mine run loose and I live in the country.

How sad for the dog and his owners. But again the dog was not on a leash. A couple of minutes of the owners time to snap that leash on and things would have turned out differently. I have to admit that I have let my dogs walk out in the front yard without a leash but it will never happen again. Just not worth the risk.
If what I read is true, the bottom line is man with gun and permit= legal. Dog without a leash= illegal.

What would the bike rider have done had the dog been on a long line though? Most of those can be anywhere from 15 to 30 feet in length, so it would still have been possible for the dog to be "leashed" and still have reached the bike rider while he passed. Would he still have shot the dog under those circumstances? I have a 20 ft long line that I keep my dogs on when I am in the front yard with them, however I NEVER leave them unattended out there on it. Mysti used to be out front with me unleashed, but again I was always right there with her and she almost never left her property. The only time she ever approached anyone was when they came upon her property. And she WAS a certified therapy dog.

What are people thinking these days when the first instinct is to pull a gun and kill an animal? He was on a bike, he could have easily rode away from the dog as soon as he saw it approaching, or if not as others have said carry pepper spray instead of a gun. Stories like this make me sick to my stomach. Maybe the dog owner was wrong to have their pet unleashed but that is NOT an offense punishable by death.

People are running scared. If you read and work with the BSL stuff you can see why people feel they must have a way to protect themselves. We have more stories of dogs mauling and killing children and adults alike. When irresponsible people let their dogs run loose and get into trouble the put another nail in the coffin and give Wayne Pacelle and his HSUS hit men more ammo.

PEOPLE must be responsible and keep their own dogs out of trouble - that means you do not let them run loose period. PETA and HSUS will continue to keep these stories in the media but if we are responsible and protect our dogs then they won't have any ammo. If dogs are kept on leash and trained these stories will not happen.

OK OK... i read my HOA here... and it said that my dogs have to be leashed if they are NOT on my property... and i be DAMNED if someone shoots my dog on my property, we are allowed to protect our property.... so needless to say i would of ran out there... SHOT HIM... then dragged him on my property just in case he wasnt... and change the story around.

MAN what a shame... he better damn well have some type of wound....

Firstly i would like to say thank god we in the UK cannot carry guns so this kind of thing is unheard of over here, no one should be able to shoot a dog full stop, secondly people's perception of a Doberman is a devil dog who's aim in life is to attack and kill people how the hell can we change this, it seems no matter how hard we try we cannot get people to realise just what loving, bright, affectionate, funny, compassionate dogs they are.
I am sure it is not as bad over here as there floppy ears and tail make them look much softer and friendlier, i think the cropped ears do make them look more unapproachable and frighten people more, but still no need to shoot a dog.
You know however careful you are sometimes you dog does escape or run off, or does something they never normally do, nothing is perfect in life unfortunately but most try to do their best, no dog deserves to die like this , it just breaks my heart to hear of it , if it had been my dog i would have gladly shot the man on the bike and done time for it:mad:

Another tragic story that could have been avoided. I admit, I take Spock outside not on leash but he always has some form of control. If not a leash then a charged electric collar and he knows that the beep or light shock means come here and respects it. We also have taught him that he is not to go beyond the end of the driveway or even onto the public sidewalk without one of us with him. He respects it and that is why we allow him to be without the direct physical control of the leash. If that ever changes he'll go back on leash until we get him retrained. River does not, she is a puppy and is ALWAYS on leash in the front yard. This is as much for the dog's protection as it is for any person or dog walking by. Admittedly these people let their Dobe wander in the front yard off lead and without any supervision (the owner heard the shot from the garage). That is completely irresponsible. The bike rider, if they had the proper permits, has every right to carry wherever he is. Most places require classes before you can carry that help teach the person when is the proper time to use the weapon. We don't know if the Dobe attacked or not since the only person who actually witnessed the incident was the shooter and the article doesn't say if he had injuries or not. I hate that the dog died, my heart goes out to the family that is mourning him. But they should have had him under control. It is a major part of being a responsible owner.
