Viho Feeling Down

This is a topic area you never want to post in but my boy is feeling poorly and theres a lesson that everyone might benefit from. Seems that my inability to get out and move freely has affected and infected my boy with a case of lick Granuloma. For those who aren't familar with it, it starts with licking on the back hock area or the top of a front paw, and develops into an obsession. I caught it a week ago from last monday and treated it with ice and bacitraycin and started to handle it well. I didn't think of Granuloma until this Tuesday, way to late. This issue starts from inactivity that develops into bordom so they obsess and a very angry looking sore develops. It starts by looking like the calluses you see on elbows from hard surfaces dogs lay on but when the licking begins the area can get very sore and an open wound will develop. I opted for a bandage with Muricin and with some reservation Doxepin to lighten his frustration. This is difficult for some dogs and can be hard to cure, the best medicine is a full active schedule with a job placed in there somewhere hahaha!! Unfortunatly I can't help him for a week or two because of my situation which caused him to develop this problem to begin with. The vet suggested a e-collar but I though zapping wouldn't work anyways...........only kidding the E-collar was the lamp shade deal and thats a pretty funny suggestion if you know Pudg, that will NOT work hahaha!!! I need to be up and out starting this Monday for PT so I think I can get ready for the field with him very soon, I have no choice I need to get him back to good health. I was surprised he held pretty good weight since he hasn't been to the field since March 20th, he weighed 77lbs yesterday and I'm happy about that I thought he looked to be 73 or 74!!! So thats the story of a bored Dobermann with all of their intelect you'd think they could turn on the TV and get into the soaps guess not. Looks like we both gotta get goin with more healin', I'll let you know how the boy's doin'. Von.

I wish you and Viho the best of luck with the lick granuloma. My RIP girl Tae scraped a piece the size of a silver dollar off the top of her foot trying to get a coon out of an old van that had been discarded at the back of our farm. This wound eventually turned into a lick granuloma and I tried everything, bandaged it, she tore the bandages off, coated the bandages with tabasco but it didn't stop her, sprayed bitter apple that didn't stop her, I tried everything, the E collar she could just bring her foot up to her mouth with it on, it was useless!! The vet tech suggested a shock collar, but I couldn't see that working if I couldn't be home with her all the time. We would almost get it healed and she would start licking till it was raw.....we never did get it completely healed for any lenght of time.

can you possibly hide stuff and make a game out of him finding it? or maybe teach him to open the fridge and get you a beer *LOL*

Seriously, I know its no laughing matter - and your own frustrations with being im-mobile added to your frustration to not be able to work your dog - I will pray that you can get out and start a bit of "outside" physical activity - you both need it for your combined mental health!t!

Aww, poor guy... It's not your fault and I hope he can get out of the habit now that you're going to be able to get out and about again soon. Congrats on that BTW, I know it's been a long drawn out battle, but we all know how tough and determined you are at the same time... :)

I didn't know that's what the licking thing was called (go figure), but our GSP (RIP) developed it too after a bug bite and it turned into an obsession with him. He did get a ton of exercise too, but he'd go sneak off to lick every time he had a chance...

VC,

You may want to try the Elizabethan collar. They come in various sizes so it should not be difficult to find one that will not allow him to get to that spot. My guys have worn them from time to time for other reasons and they learned to use them rather quickly. The reason I mention this is that it may help to break the habit faster than anything else. Adding some work to the equation will help also, but you could use the collar for the down time if he persists in the behaviour.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Nellie

Thanks guys we'll get it done in the next few weeks. Trinity your not that far off, I wanted to mention in the opening that mental stimulation is as important as the exercise. I found his puppy kong and I have the large black one so that will start tonite and I'll drag out his toy box when he was a pup, I think I still have some that I didn't give away. We'll do some search & find and retrieve work. I started playing my drums and all of my dogs through the years could do without that but Pudg will sit by the doorway and watch me with a serious look as if awaiting a command.................maybe ATTACK!!! hahaha!!!! He seems to love it as I do. Later gang. Von.

Man this injury stuff is contagious! J/K Hope you both heal up quickly. Glad to hear that soon you'll be more or less up and about and able to get you both some much needed outside time.

Very interesting Von. I certainly can understand how that develops and you have given everyone here something to ponder. I guess I should get off here and walk my dog!! lol

Can you teach him fetch? At least that you can do from a chair. :dunno:

He knows it, he did it as a pup but he doesn't like to share he's a snob and would rather tease then share. Bad manners these Euro block heads have but I'll tie a long twine on a toy and when he runs by as if to tease with it hangin out of his mouth I yank it out and then don't give it to him. I substitute another toy while showing the other one then trade out until he wants to share if not I'll be tired by then, so will he. Two steps ahead of the brat.We need to start slowly because he's very out of shape and I have more atrophy then a wet rag. Maybe I can hire someone with a dog to workout for us??? Von

Hey man,

I went to sign up on your website but it doesn't appear to be working. Maybe I can get a better deal though? How about 23 payments of $69.99. DCF discount.

Mike

Well.......I'm glad to hear you're up to playing your drums again!
I've heard that the more intelligent a dog,the bigger the OCD risk and it only makes sense. In the winter,I'm very watchful for Shiloh licking from boredom and if she starts licking too much,I give her something to do.
I'm sure there's nothing I can give you for advice, frozen treat kongs, hiding toys, etc.,that you haven't already thought of with all your experience so I'll just say that I'll add Viho to my prayers along with you and VonD for healing.

The boy was blasted today on meds. soooo I will cut the dosage in half and see how he does over the weekend if the results aren't to my liking I'll try Valerian Root suggested by Dede. I might try a few of his pills he seemed to be completely relaxed without a care in the world the kitten walked under his nose and I think he blew her a kiss and told her to make him a sandwich, I think. Von

Thanks D4e if the weather wasn't so damn hot in the early mornings and at night the yard play could help but it's to hot. The field we went to prior to the accident does have a shade tree area about a 1/2 acre, not bad to hang out there early morning. We'll see!!!!!! Von.

ps/ ya a pup thats a great idea in my situation and health, thanks! V.

Hey Von hope you two are getting better, been there done that with the lick thing we used a stretchy tape and bitter apple on the tape and that worked well of course that was for the front leg.
