Rough coated dobie

So his ears are cropped? Would love to see more pics. He does lay and stare just like a Doberman. Does he have tan markings on his chest?
He does have rust markings on chest as he gets older and his coat has grown they are harder to see but here is a pic of him at about 15 or 16

Interesting! I don’t know much about genes, but I do remember seeing some posts about this. They almost remind me of Gordon Setters (which are a beautiful breed too imo).

Hey called the first vet he went to for dna and crop they go thru embark but its been over 4 yrs ago and i dont use them since so im ordering my own kit to test as they say they dont have it anymore i thought i had a copy and im sure i do do but tearing apart all records i can not find. Please dont give up on this it is a true thing i will send the results from new dna test or if i find the first one will post

In the end when you love your dog, things like this don't and shouldn't matter to you. We only want to know things about genetics because we love the breed, and as @Panama says curious minds want to know more about genes & genetics - coat color and length is all tied to certain genes - and since this isn't a variety listed in Dobermans (that I know of) we just wonder how the gene got there.

Love your dog - would love to see more photos and tell us more about him & his personality! Have you had him since a puppy or did you just get him recently?
Finally have results from embark
Please do. I'm curious as to what gene/allele they claim it is associated with.

Embark results

Interesting! Medium wolfiness? Wonder what they actually mean by that ill have to look it up.

How was your experience with Embark?

Very interesting! I know I've seen it before with other purebred Dobermans though.

This is what I found on their site.
Only Embark is able to provide you with a wolfiness score for your dog. A higher wolfiness score does not mean your dog has recent wolf ancestry (this would be reflected in the breed results), but does mean your dog has some neat, ancient genetic variants! We look at divergent markers in those regions and assign each dog a "wolfiness" score. There are a couple dozen regions of the genome that scientists think were really important in dog domestication (called "candidate domestication regions" or CDR) because they have very different patterns of genetic diversity in dogs versus wolves.

Wow, 100% Doberman. I have to say I expected something else to be mixed in, but now that I see the results, I'm so intrigued lol. Chewy should have his own thread on here just so we can keep up with his life. Does he have any social media we can follow? I wonder if he does anything different due to the 'wolfy' genes. I wonder what the wolfy percentage is in Dobermans without a rough coat. And is the coat rough to the touch? It looks like soft fur to me or at least like a German Shepherd. What's his heat tolerance like? How is his shedding?

He is fairly soft to touch but sheds like crazy he loves the snow but tolerates our heat here in idaho

Thank you for sharing the report! I'm fascinated by it all. Please do join in our other conversations about Doberman traits and antics, and if you have seen differences or similarities. Again, thanks for sharing your unique boy with us!

I will but he acts like any doberman i have the pleasure to be around the leaning on you following you everywhere you go talks a lot very protective loves his balls and to run especially behind or should i say in front of our golf cart as we have 13 acres to run him on he likes the water but you need a log not a stick to keep him interesteted.
