Getting another Doberman

So I know there is a lot of people that say you can and can’t have 2 Dobermans but I just wanted to see if I WAS to get another one would it be a bad idea to have a boy and a girl? My boy is 7 months now and I would be getting a baby girl and it’s not for having puppies it’s just to have one of each and they have different parents. Any feed back would be great and yes I know it WILL be a lot of work lol

Go for it, train separately, give each individual time with you including outings. Somethings can be done together but you must continue the bond separately as well.

Until about 6 months ago I always had a pair. IMHO different sexes is a better idea than a same sex pair.
I also like to have about 2 years in age difference. Makes it easier to have one out of the puppy stage and at least reasonably trained before bringing on more chaos. Not sure how we would hold up having 2 pups in the house at one time.

That's what went thru my mind when I read this.....Mo was well trained by the time we brought Bam into our home...and that was the biggest sanity saver for us. Mo was two years old when we got Bam....Bam was almost a year old when we brought him home......so we were well past puppy stage with both guys.

This is our first time having two at the same time ( both neutered males) and the only regret I have is I wish I were younger so I could keep up with them better...LOL.

It's kinda "it's not work if you love what you are doing"...for us.

For us.....having two isn't always "lot more work" but it does keep us hopping.

They are trained to "team work" together pretty well with feeding time, loading to go out, walking on leads with one person, bed time and so on.

What does take more time is working with them...since I have to double up on the time.....they train together and separate....they each get an "alone time walk" during the day. I went from spending a couple of hours a day on all this for one.....to five hours or so for two....... when you add in time for getting them swapped out..one in and the other out. Then you have the added costs.....this breed ain't cheap to keep.....and double that up...and it can turn into a bit of a load P.D.Q.

Then theres a whole new kind of insanity...when they can't get outside due to weather. Right now...the only time we are getting out is --watching the weather radar----timed potty runs...cuz there's a nasty bit of stormy weather coming at us...all day yesterday...today and into tomorrow....so I got double dogs going dingbats from cabin fever...
Soooooooooooooooo they have doubled MY:pullhair::weird::pullhair:

^ I always tossed the idea of a second doberman. But Jasper is so much work and the more I think of it, the more I believe I would be better off with just him. Double the energy, training, food, vacuuming, and health insurance coverage. Just some things to really think about. As long as you take time to think about it and find it is a good fit- go for it.

I agree that if you wait until he is mature and trained, you may just keep your sanity. Im sure two can bring so much joy, but two crazy puppies would make me rip my hair out!

We will always have two since they interact so much differently than they do with humans and it puts a smile on my face every day.

I like the 2 year age difference when it's possible and you're definitely much better off to have a male and female as long as you are very careful when the female is in heat.

It all depends on you. I’ve recently been uprooted from my home and been on the hunt for a new house, some would be ok if I only had one dog. Those are with a limited or no yard where I’d have to engage in routine walks/runs. One dog? Ok. Three? No ones happy. Opposite genders are a far better gamble but it really depends on the individual dogs. Some dogs don’t like others no matter the gender, and some like mine are intact boys and are best friends.

But do you think a 2 year difference is a big gap for them..
I personally think it's a perfect gap since the older one is old enough to be settled down some but yet young enough to want to play with the new pup.

Yes I agree as long as they can still play.. I kind of don’t wanna have to be some what done with the puppy stage and then start it all over again if that make sense lol.. it will be a pain but would be nice to have it all done and over with
