Ragnar cut foot pad

The girls let asshat out to greet me as I was pulling into the driveway. Asshat immediately starts running after squirrels at the back of the property. Opened up the gash pretty well he did!.!.!

Man, that IS pretty deep. It doesn't seem to hurt him. Or maybe he was just having too much fun! He probably felt it later. :(

So I noticed yesterday that the insides of his pads were getting pink and red- irritated for some reason. You can see the red spot in the first picture. Be it from the tape or ACE wrap??

So since he has somewhat become accustomed to being subdued and I feel like the wound is getting better, I am no longer ACE wrapping or full coverage Coban unless he goes outside.

I am just covering the area of the gash for now. I have to constantly redirect him to no lick at it because I think he smells the honey.

I am very pleased the wound seems to be stabilized and improving.

Closing up nicely and looking much better today. Going to the mini bandage vs entire foot ACE wrap and also decreased the redness areas in/around his toes.

I received the XL Paw balloon gloves yesterday. I am so glad about the reference given by @My2Girls. A large wouldn’t even come close to be big enough. The XL is good for paw space but damn it’s hard to stretch the neck of the ballon out to get over his paw. He doesn’t like it and will gnaw at it some but as with everything else, I redirect him and he gets use to the unfamiliar feeling.

It's not too tight around the opening, is it? That's the only thing I would worry about. Sometimes things don't even have to be tight to be irritating. I'm the type of gal that can hardly wear a headband. I get a headache even if it's not tight! I always think of these little girl infants with their ribbon headbands around their head and wonder if they get the same headache. :confused-alt: Anything snug around my wrists or ankles irritates me too. So I always worry about my animals in the same way. I think those booties are awesome and can come in handy as long as I'm confident they're not too tight.

So the booties I recommended, I only use them for short periods of time to cover bandaged paws when we go outside only. I do not keep those on inside. I use a plain toddler sock taped at the top for indoors.

We’ve had many paw injuries and the biggest problem we came across was keeping the bandages clean when bringing the dogs outside. The vet would tell us to wrap in cling wrap or bread bag and tape at top - well those barely made it for pee breaks/short walks and they were a big process to put on and take off. And that’s where the balloon booties came in.. with a little practice they are easy to take on and off for those pee breaks. I wouldn’t leave those on indoors or long term.

TBH, I wish it was just snug. I think it does fit too tight on his leg but it only stays on maybe 15mins so he tolerates it.

I even have given it a thought of cutting a slit at the top to see if I could get it to loosen up but that would prob rip down the side.

A good product to put on for outside and then take off when back inside.

So roughly 14 day’s recovery with good wound care and products. Initially, I changed bandage 2x day because asshat would not settle. On the 2nd week, he understood the program better and I only changed bandage once a day.

I learned a very good lesson with this- no way was I going to unweight his foot to promote wound healing. Best thing is to keep him calm and decrease activity as much as you can.

It has closed up nicely. A lot better than I thought considering how deep the gash was.

It may end up having a small groove though.

Crazy thing is that it never slowed him down. I was more aware and cautious of it than he was.

Shadow has dry paw pads and nose (I’ve discussed it with the vet - some are just dry others it allergy related). Anyway, her paw pads have deep groves like that - not injury related just dry. Now that we are in VA and have winters we need to keep them hydrated either with that paw mush stuff or I’ll put coconut oil on them at night with baby socks over them  They got really bad and cracked to the point where they were bleeding and thus the beauty treatment.
